❗️Statement of the CEU Student Union Representatives on the military invasion of Ukraine
In recent days, the values of peace and sovereignty have been continuously tossed aside by the imperialist tendencies of the Russian Federation. Eight years after the seizure of Crimea and the invasion of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, a new humanitarian crisis has arisen– one that is a result of nothing more than violent aggression. Today, we mark the sad return of war and suffering to Europe.
Reawakening struggles from 2014, when the region was shaken by a series of pro-Russian demonstrations in various cities in Ukraine and the proclamation of "state sovereignty" of "DPR" and "LPR", Vladimir Putin has on Monday officially recognized the independence of two Ukrainian territories, providing these entities with military support.
On Friday, his acts continued with a military attack on multiple Ukrainian cities, destroying dozens of military bases, bridges, and airports, bringing huge distress to the civilian population, and blocking the access to reliable sources of information and banking via ongoing cyber-attacks. These attacks, in only one day, took the lives of many soldiers and civilians. A further escalation of the war threatens the health and well-being of millions of Ukrainians.
We at CEU know better than to fall for Putin’s neo-imperial rhetoric. We at CEU know that this war is illegitimate, undemocratic, and unlawful. And we at CEU know that this war is not the wish of any student. It is our obligation, as seekers and defenders of democracy, peace and knowledge, to lead through our words and actions.
As the members of CEU Student Union, acting as representatives of the whole student body, we strongly condemn these violations of international law, human rights, and peace. CEU is an institution committed to open and democratic societies that respect human rights and human dignity. We are here to give support to those in Ukraine facing these dark times, and to those who are giving their all to oppose this war, be they in Russia or elsewhere.
We stand with you in this struggle, in collective resistance to the forces which are threatening democracy. We will continue to advocate in all forms for freedom, democracy, and solidarity. And we call on every student, faculty and staff from Ukraine, Russia, or any other country, to uphold, defend and promote these values and remain on the path of peace and love, rejecting hatred and lies.
We encourage our community to attend the anti-war protests in Budapest, Vienna, or any other city in the world in which they may reside. We encourage our community to provide financial support and volunteer efforts to Ukrainian charities and organizations helping Ukrainian refugees. And we encourage our community to give emotional support and solidarity to all the members of the community who need it.
Our unity, compassion and memory are stronger than any attack. We stand united and we always will.
In solidarity,
CEU Student Union Representatives
