Early 1990s were dream years indeed ... until the day Rabin was assasinated by a mad settler Jew. That day was the change that led to pure evil like netanyahu and cronies leading and destroying Israel.

For many Israelis, the 1990s were dream years – albeit a dream that was shattered. I recall the songs we sang in school – "Peace is a Useful Word," "I Was Born for Peace" and "A Song for Peace." I ask my childhood friends, who have school-aged children, what songs they sing in class today, and the message is religious in essence. The answer to every evil is faith. But the differences between the two decades cannot be explained solely as the increased religiosity of Israeli society.

Suddenly, it is easy to understand how we got to the place we are at today. The 1990s ideas of peace were no less religious than 2026's songs of faith. The peace that they sold us in popular culture was an abstract, spiritual idea, disconnected from the real people with whom we had to reach agreements. We made peace with caricatures of people on camels.

On the other hand, with all the cringe, the desire was at least fundamentally good. After two and a half years of constant war, will it ever be possible to restore to Israeli culture the belief that such a thing as "peace" is even an option? Will my children ever sing songs for peace at school? Will the idea, innocent as it may be, become trendy again, or are we doomed to extinction like the other phenomena of the 1990s? |
