Michael Trout received his undergraduate degree in philosophy and his graduate degree in psychology from Michigan. He completed his specialization training in infant psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical School, under the mentorship of Selma Fraiberg, a pioneer in the field of infant mental health.
Having worked in the field of mental health since 1968, Trout opened her private practice in 1979 and headed an institute that conducted research, clinical practice, and professional training on attachment issues. She has held significant international positions in the field of infant mental health; she served as the founding president of the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health and the World Association for Infant Mental Health. She was also a founding editorial board member of the Infant Mental Health Journal , a leading scientific publication in the field , and held various executive positions in international organizations working in prenatal and perinatal psychology.
Michael Trout is the author of numerous scholarly articles and book chapters, as well as * The Jonathon Letters * (2005), which discusses his experiences with foster care and adoption ; *Baby Verses: The Narrative Poetry of Infants and Toddlers * (2008), which poetically portrays the world of babies and toddlers; and *This Hallowed Ground: Four Decades in Infant Mental Health* , which shares his experiences from his professional life .
She has also produced 16 documentary films used in universities and clinics worldwide. These works are particularly noteworthy for their exploration of life events such as divorce, adoption, loss, domestic violence, and parental incarceration from the perspective of infants. Her meditation program for foster and adoptive parents, “The Hope-Filled Parent,” has also garnered significant attention.
Throughout her career, Trout has focused on understanding the emotional world of babies and strengthening the parent-baby bond. She is also the co-author of the book See Me as a Person: Creating Therapeutic Relationships with Patients and Their Families, written for healthcare professionals.
She has been awarded the Selma Fraiberg Award for her significant contributions to meeting the needs of infants and their families through her work ; she has also received various Lifetime Achievement Awards for her contributions in the fields of attachment, prenatal and perinatal mental health .
However, Michael Trout emphasizes that the most valuable work of his career has always been his one-on-one clinical practice with families and children. After working with children of different age groups and families for 46 years, he retired from active clinical life in 2014.
