IKS Symposium 2027 Registration Open
Early Bird Registration for the 28th International Kodály Society Symposium is now open on the symposium website, www.ikssymposium2027.com. Taking place from August 4 to 8 in Cork, Ireland, the Symposium promises five days of academic, cultural, musical and social events with participants from all over the world. We look forward to exploring our theme Varied Cultures, Shared Experiences with all our distinguished delegates.

Symposium Fees
Early Bird Rate: €420 (Available until 28 February 2027)
Regular Registration: €500
Student Rate: €250

The Symposium fee includes:
Admission to all academic sessions, workshops and rehearsals
Tickets to all Symposium concerts and events
Admission to the Opening and Closing Receptions, including refreshments
The Symposium Excursion, including bus transfers, performances and lunch
Morning and afternoon tea/coffee
Printed copy of the Symposium booklet
Details of our Symposium accommodation partners and other local accommodation options will be available on our website in the coming weeks. The website also provides further details about Cork, our venues, and how businesses or individuals can support the Symposium. In response to requests and to ensure a broad and representative pool of submissions, we have extended the deadline for contributions until Sunday December 6. The President and Board Members of the International Kodály Society, together with members of the International Katalin Forrai Award Committee, visited the Kodály Institute to mark the 100th anniversary of Katalin Forrai’s birth. They toured our archives in the Old College building and met with the Director of the Institute to prepare a special research program dedicated to studying the legacy of this renowned music educator.

65 éve, 1961 augusztusában választotta elnökévé Kodály Zoltánt a Nemzetközi Népzenei
Tanács (IFMC – International Folk Music Council).
Megválasztása a magyar népzenekutatás nemzetközi rangjának elismerése is volt, mint
reflektál erre Richter Pál írása a Magyar Zene 62. évfolyamának 2. számában. Elnökként azt
az elvet képviselte, hogy a népzenekutatás a nemzeti kutatóműhelyek együttműködésére
kell épüljön, ösztönözte a tudományos alapkutatásokat, a hiteles hangfelvételek gyűjtését és
közzétételét, valamint hozzájárult ahhoz, hogy az etnomuzikológia egyre inkább a zene
társadalmi és kulturális összefüggéseit is vizsgálja. Az ő elnöksége idején rendezhette meg
Budapest az IFMC 1964-es konferenciáját, amely tovább erősítette Magyarország
nemzetközi szakmai tekintélyét. A döntés kölcsönösen gyümölcsözőnek bizonyult: a Tanács
világhírű, nagy tekintélyű vezetőt nyert, Kodály Zoltán pedig nemzetközi fórumok egész
során fejthette ki véleményét a népzene megőrzésének és kutatásának fontosságáról.

Sixty-five years ago, in August 1961, Zoltán Kodály was elected President of the International Folk Music Council (IFMC).
His election also signified international recognition of Hungarian folk music research, as reflected in Pál Richter’s article published in issue 2 of volume 62 of Magyar Zene. As president, Kodály advocated the principle that folk music research should be built upon the cooperation of national research communities. He encouraged fundamental scholarly research, the collection and publication of authentic sound recordings, and contributed to the development of ethnomusicology as a field increasingly attentive to the social and cultural contexts of music. During his presidency, Budapest hosted the IFMC conference in 1964, further strengthening Hungary’s international professional reputation.
The decision proved mutually beneficial: the Council gained a world-renowned and highly respected leader, while Zoltán Kodály had the opportunity to express his views on the importance of preserving and researching folk music across numerous international forums.
