Day 2 - departure to Vynohradive.

Lyudmila Svoreny and her son Vlodimir picked us up from Nagydobrony. We said our goodbyes to Baksa Andras, and the lovely people of Chomony.

Last night we sat around the hotel lobby , talking about how we all experienced day. It becomes so much more real, when you are here. Understanding how the Hungarian minority in Ukraine is dealing with the consequences of the war. We all agreed, what is wrong here, is clearly the “oppression of an unchecked power” (meaning Russia ) as Alex Davern would say.

This was the first time - and I’ve been coming across to Ukraine a lot, the last 2 years - when we met so many check points on the road. The officers are friendly, but still feel like “mini borders” , you have to prove yourself to have the right to free travel. For me, it’s easy, I’m a woman. But still you have that uneasy feeling .

Transkarpattia (Kárpátaljai) is 1800 km far away from the war zone. It’s a safe place . Before you start worrying. This is why so many rehabilitation centers built here, kids homes and many inner refugees in the cities. We continue our trip. A long and busy day ahead.

Day 1 / Chomony (Csongor ) village shared table

I wanted to say “shared dinner “ first, but doesn’t describe the feeling .

It was very much like one table , where you have the entire village key (young) support raising families coming together, and the local area leaders are present . The boys cooked a local version of tasty Gulyás stew together, with plenty of Palinka going.

I loved that the wife’s and partners were invited to join the evening. As we opened the school dining room doors, here they were, decorating and setting up the hall. For us. I mean for them and us together . It’s a whole different level of hospitality . Made me feel like “we did this together “ . And that is exactly what happened.

I felt something that takes time to experience: having the trust of the locals, to share not just their cooking , but also their life stories. If you walk in to any village mayor, asking the questions we asked, you may not get an answere. But 2 years of us coming back, being here, resulted in honest conversations. I really appreciated their trust . And I’m grateful for Baksa Andras for organizing this dinner.,

It’s starts today. Under the Direct Aid for Ukraine initiative, we are heading to Ukraine, with an aid mission I have been working on the last couple of months, as a volunteer.

Very intense program is ahead of us. Csongori Misi Mókus Óvoda has had a major makeover, we are to see the final results. Baksa Andras is hosting the coming team .

We are going to see homecoming soldiers , spending a dinner night with them and their families. They leave back to the front line, aided with pickup trucks, warm winter clothing and more. Lyudmila Svoreny is our partner to organize this part of the program .

We are delivering drones to Usghorod, to the famous Robert Brody and his “Hungarian Birds”. This is to happen thanks to the regional government and military administration.

We are helping the local community of Haranglab, by furnishing a kids place , that brings together the little ones . Éva Kecskés helped to design the space , just like the other nursery projects.

Going back to the special needs little boys home, to replace their 50+ years old transport ambulance car. They are to receive a minibus, to aid with their daily transport .

Talking minibus, the second vehicle is going to help a local humanitarian aid center in Vynohradive.

We are to meet the famous professor, Sándor Fegyir. A joint project with the Kárpátaljai Sárkányellátó Alapítvány should come to light, by delivering special surveillance drones to the newly founded veteran school of drone pilots .

We hope to hand over a renovated new hospital wing, at Uzsghorod county hospital , to help the healing of many injured soldiers.
Our part was to bring the training equipments .

We are to visit the kids regional hospital of Munkachevo , and we don’t go empty handed. The entire oncology department to get new bed sets, fridges, washing machines.

First time, since this aid project started, we are going to meet families affected by the war, on a very personal level.
