Climate accountability is moving into the courtroom.
In Belgium, a farmer is taking legal action against a major energy company, arguing that climate change is already affecting his agricultural livelihood.
A Belgian court has ruled the case admissible as a key milestone. It confirms that individuals impacted by climate change can, in principle, take multinational corporations to court. The court also recognised that agriculture is directly affected by the climate crisis, with farmers already facing its consequences.
Fossil fuels drive over 75% of global emissions, and their impacts are no longer abstract; they are measurable, from crop losses to pressure on food systems.
This is the first case of its kind in Belgium. If successful, it could set an important precedent for corporate accountability.
Climate change is no longer just an environmental issue, it is a matter of justice.
