Fuego del Sol Haiti sends a big THANK YOU to the Simmons Center for Global Chicago and to our Simmons Center Intern from Washington and Lee University: Lily Ha!

During her internship, Lily shared a bit about her experience with us:

My name is Lily Ha, and I am currently a Sophomore at Washington and Lee University majoring in Business Administration and minoring in Data Science and Poverty Studies. My professional goals are to work in international development and corporate social responsibility, supporting initiatives that drive sustainable and equitable change.”

I admired Fuego del Sol’s commitment to sustainable development and community empowerment. In particular, the focus on creating long-term impact through local partnerships really stood out to me.”

“The highlight of my internship was the opportunity to support meaningful projects that directly contribute to Fuego del Sol’s mission through my work in social media and grant research. I gained a deeper understanding of how global partnerships can create real, lasting change.”

✨ Thank you, Lily, for your passion, dedication, and valuable contributions to Fuego del Sol’s mission!

This summer, we were fortunate enough to have one of our interns, Ashley Joseph, join us at the Haitian-Dominican border market, where she provided crucial translation that made our work possible. Reflecting on her experience there, Ashley writes,

"Visiting the border between Pedernales in the Dominican Republic and Anse-à-Pitres in Haiti was one of the most striking experiences of my internship. I had spent months imagining this space, hearing stories of its tensions and complexities, but being there in person brought those realities into focus. The border is more than just a line dividing two countries—it is a place where culture, language, power, and survival collide. The sounds of motorcycles, the overlapping conversations in Spanish and Creole, and the visible authority of Dominican border patrol all revealed how history and inequality shape daily life at this crossing."

Exciting News! Kevin’s work with Fuego del Sol, “Negative Health Risk Factors in Haitian Charcoal Cooking; Initial Field Research,” has been accepted for presentation at the 37th Annual Haitian Studies Association Conference in Pittsburgh this October!

We are proud to contribute to this year’s theme: “1825 | 2025: Restitisyon ak Reparasyon,” an essential conversation about justice, health, and sustainability in Haiti.

This photo is from the Symposium back in March, where Kevin first learned of the opportunity!

Stay tuned as we continue working towards cleaner, safer solutions!
