Puerto Rico Constitution Day 🇵🇷

Today we recognize Puerto Rico Constitution Day, commemorating the enactment of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico on July 25, 1952. Approved by the people of Puerto Rico and recognized under U.S. law, the Constitution established Puerto Rico’s framework for local self-government as a U.S. territory.

Featured in this post is the Cruceta del Vigía in Ponce, an iconic observation tower inspired by the historic vigías (watchmen) who once monitored the southern coast for approaching ships. Today, it stands as a symbol of Puerto Rico’s rich history and cultural heritage.

Today, we recognize this important constitutional milestone and honor the history, resilience, and contributions of the Puerto Rican people throughout the Caribbean and around the world.

Happy Bahamas Independence Day 🇧🇸

Today, we celebrate 53 years of independence as the Commonwealth of The Bahamas proudly marks its independence from the United Kingdom on July 10, 1973.

More than 700 islands and cays make up this beautiful archipelago, but The Bahamas is also home to one of the Caribbean’s most treasured cultural traditions — Junkanoo. This vibrant festival of music, dance, and handcrafted costumes has roots dating back centuries and remains a powerful expression of Bahamian creativity, resilience, and national pride.

Wishing everyone across The Bahamas and the Bahamian diaspora a joyful and memorable Independence Day!

🇻🇮 Today, HCPA honors U.S. Virgin Islands Emancipation Day, commemorating the historic proclamation of freedom on July 3, 1848.

Formerly known as the Danish West Indies, the islands gained their freedom when Governor-General Peter von Scholten declared all enslaved people free after a mass uprising led by the revered freedom fighter General Buddhoe (Moses Gottlieb) in Frederiksted, St. Croix.

Today, the U.S. Virgin Islands is made up of St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John, and Water Island, along with approximately 50 smaller islands and cays. Together, they are celebrated for their rich history, vibrant culture, and resilient spirit.

The statue featured in this post is the Freedom Monument in Frederiksted, St. Croix. It portrays an emancipated man blowing a conch shell, a traditional Caribbean instrument once used to announce important events and bring communities together. Today, it stands as a lasting symbol of freedom, courage, and resilience.

As we commemorate this important day, we honor the bravery of those who fought for liberty and celebrate the enduring heritage of the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

🇻🇪 Standing with Venezuela

The Houston Caribbean Professionals Association extends our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the people of Venezuela following the devastating 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that struck on June 24, 2026.

The earthquakes caused widespread destruction across northern Venezuela, particularly in and around La Guaira and Caracas, leaving thousands dead or injured, displacing countless families, and creating an ongoing humanitarian crisis. Rescue teams, first responders, healthcare workers, and volunteers continue working tirelessly to save lives and bring relief to those in need.

As members of the Greater Caribbean community, we stand in solidarity with everyone affected. Our hearts are with the families grieving unimaginable loss, those recovering from injuries, and the communities facing the difficult road to recovery. Together, we are reminded that compassion, resilience, and unity know no borders.

If you would like to help, consider supporting trusted humanitarian organizations, including:

* International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)
* Project HOPE
* Direct Relief
* UNICEF

Keeping Venezuela and its people in our hearts 🙏🏾❤️

Happy CARICOM Day! 🌴

Today, July 1, we celebrate CARICOM Day, honoring the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and its commitment to regional unity, cooperation, and shared prosperity.

CARICOM was established through the Treaty of Chaguaramas, signed on July 4, 1973, by Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago. Today, CARICOM consists of 15 Member States working together to strengthen economic integration, trade, education, health, climate resilience, security, disaster preparedness, and the free movement of people throughout the Caribbean.

The Conference of Heads of Government is CARICOM’s highest decision-making body, bringing together Heads of Government, the CARICOM Secretary-General, and senior regional officials to shape policies, strengthen cooperation, and advance the collective interests of the Caribbean.

The images in this carousel highlight the leadership and collaboration that drive CARICOM’s mission. CARICOM’s 15 Member States are: 🇦🇬 Antigua & Barbuda, 🇧🇸 Bahamas, 🇧🇧 Barbados, 🇧🇿 Belize, 🇩🇲 Dominica, 🇬🇩 Grenada, 🇬🇾 Guyana, 🇭🇹 Haiti, 🇯🇲 Jamaica, 🇲🇸 Montserrat, 🇰🇳 Saint Kitts & Nevis, 🇱🇨 Saint Lucia, 🇻🇨 Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, 🇸🇷 Suriname, and 🇹🇹 Trinidad & Tobago.

Together, these nations celebrate a shared heritage while embracing the diversity that makes the Caribbean one of the world’s most vibrant regions. On this CARICOM Day, we celebrate our unity, resilience, and collective vision for a stronger future.
