Haiti Children's Home

Haiti Children's Home Haiti Children’s Home was founded in 1984 by Patricia Louise Smith of Michigan, USA to care for ill and malnourished children in Haiti.

Over the years, HCH has seen hundreds of children come through our doors, some to be cared for until they are matched with an adoptive family, and many others until they are strong and healthy enough to return to their Haitian families. We are a faith-based mission and funded by various North American churches, friends, and family, as well as the Haitian Children's Aid Society, a charity registere

d in both Canada and the United States, which support Haitian organizations. HCH currently has 16 children in our care ranging in ages of 2-15 years of age. The children are cared for by an amazing team international staff who serve as administrators, nannies, cooks, teachers, activity facilitators, security guards, etc. This is the smallest number of children we have had in care for many years, as we have diligently worked to strengthen our family support programs and facilitate care for children within their family structures. Haiti Children's Home is licensed to do adoptions in Haiti, and currently is working with Canadian and American agencies to match adoptive families with children needing a family. HCH is also blessed to be able to facilitate a number of other programs to support and empower our community, such as the formula program, which provides formula to at-risk families each week, as well as medical care and education as needed. There is also a nutrition program, which provides outpatient treatment for children who are malnourished, and assists children needing specialized medical care. Our most recent program is an educational support program, where we seek sponsors to assist community children to attend school, meeting another specific need in our community. All of these programs have grown over the years, allowing us to support families in crisis, and provide supportive options for families instead of taking children into permanent care.

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

We are happy to report that K is doing pretty well for having had major heart surgery a week ago!
He’s had a couple rough days as would be expected, but it’s gradually improving and he’s pretty thankful for that.
Getting up and moving is still pretty uncomfortable, but K is working with the therapy team to make sure he maintains his gains! 🕺🏾
Please keep praying for K. He’s come to understand more regarding how this healing process is gonna take time, and that’s been a bit tough to process. 🙁
Thanks to all who have been praying for him! He’s so grateful to know so many of you are doing so! 🙏

K update ❤️‍🩹😍❤️
August 12- 11:00 a.m.

We have been able to send a few messages back and forth to K in the ICU via the social worker, and it has been great to hear K’s voice!!

K seems quite upbeat and was happy to communicate with us. The ICU team there has been working with him really well to establish some good pain control, so he has minimal discomfort at this time. 👌

Please continue to pray for K to heal well and have a smooth recovery.

We’d also ask you to pray for “L”, another patient from K’s group who had heart surgery yesterday, and also the two men who are preparing for surgery tmrw. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Please check yesterday’s post for all of the updates we added throughout the day about K.

Photo: Throwback to one of our most favorite pics of K when he was a little boy. 😍

Update 8:30 p.m.-K is doing well in ICU and now breathing on his own again. He’s sleeping a lot of course, and appears to be very stable at this time. Please pray for good rest, pain control, and continued good return to all bodily functions. Thank you for praying throughout the day. ❤️‍🩹🙏❤️

Update 2:30 p.m. - K came through surgery and the reperfusion of his heart very well!!! He is now in the ICU for post-op recovery care.
Thank you Lord!!!
Thank you for continuing to pray as he goes thru post op recovery. ❤️‍🩹 🙏❤️

Update: Tuesday August 11th 12pm- Kevin is still in surgery. It has been about 6 hours so far. There were a couple unexpected issues once they accessed his heart and the damaged valve, but he is doing really well so far and the team is handling everything with expertise. ( Details provided from the heart program coordinator overseeing Kevin’s care).
Please keep praying for K. We will update once he is out of surgery. ❤️‍🩹🙏❤️

Update to the update: surgery is scheduled for 5:30 a.m. MST. We’d be so thankful if you were in prayer with us early tmrw morning. 🙏

K update
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

K received news yesterday that he will be having surgery this Tuesday, August 11th.
Later this afternoon he will be admitted to the hospital to begin pre-op preparations.
This morning during our video call, K shared that he was feeling grateful to finally know when the operation would be happening, and also wondering how it’s all gonna go and how long it will be till he feels better afterwards. ❤️‍🩹

We’d like to ask you to pray with us for K over the next few days of surgery and recovery.

If you’d like to drop a prayer below 👇🏼 in the comments, we can share it with K. That would be really encouraging for him. 🙏🩷

K asked for prayer for the following: 🙏🙏🙏

❤️‍🩹1) for the surgery to go well and the heart valve repair to be successful
❤️‍🩹2)for healing time to be quick so he doesn’t miss too much school (he’s very focused on this detail)
🩲3)that he can get his boxers back on asap post surgery, lol! That detail has been the source of much laughter and jokes as our team has prepared him for what surgery entails!
✝️4) for peace in his heart
🧑‍🧒5) that the possibility of seeing someone very important in his life story that he hasn’t seen in many years, might work out while he is in the other country

👶🏾👶🏾Ti Moise Update👶🏾👶🏾

We were so delighted to get this little video update and see that Ti Moise is doing so well! 😍

If you are new here, this little guy was found carefully placed as a newborn on a footpath near our ministry, and found by a local man. He and his wife decided to adopt him, and we have had the joy of supporting this family by providing formula and medical support for Ti Moise (Little ‘Moses’ , as they named him).
For the last 18 months, our team has networked to ensure this family remained supported even after we all had to evacuate. Ti Moise has struggled with his health a couple of times, but through the persistence of our team, and the amazing support of our donors, he has recovered and is slowly but surely meeting so many developmental milestones!
Please keep praying for Ti Moise and his family, as they overcome incredible odds to provide this little boy with the love and belonging her deserves. 🙏

Our garden is doing sooooo well!

G helped us set up a PVC pipe watering system, and since we have the best little gardening team ever, it has flourished!

L could not believe how big this cucumber got!
Cucumbers are not easily found in the market and often are soft and mushy due to heat, so these are such a treat! First one off the vine! 🥒 😋

K❤️ update #2

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
K made it safely to his destination yesterday evening. ! It was a long journey, the longest he has ever been on, and it was a new experience to be taking in so much!
Today he begins getting numerous tests done and begins many days of pre-op preparations.
Thanks for praying for him as he travelled, and please continue doing so over the next number of days as he undergoes many, many tests and make some big decisions.

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

(July 26 update: travel/funding update- due to evolving travel requirements and restrictions we are unsure if any of our team will be able to travel to meet up with K. So,for now we are putting a pause on accepting donations for this need. Thanks to anyone who has already given, and any funds will be used for the post surgery care needs follow-up for K.).

5 years ago, one of our HCH family, K, got very sick, and as a result suffered damage to valves in his heart.
Since then, we have been working closely with Haiti Cardiac Alliance (HCA) to ensure he received the best care. He has been a candidate for surgery for a few years now, and thankfully has stayed in very good health while we waited for the many processes, and all the challenges to those processes, to be ironed out. This has required lots of patience and amazing dedication by the HCA team, and we all have had to pivot numerous times! K recently turned 18 and that required a few more changes and updates to everything too!

We are very excited that finally, this weekend, K will be traveling to another country to start all the pre-op preparations along with a group of heart patients from Haiti. We just found out a few days ago so it has been a whirlwind!! He will be there for 4-6 weeks.

Please pray for travel mercies, for peace to overcome anxiety for K, and for all the little details to come together over the next couple of days.

We would also appreciate your help financially as we plan to have a support person travel to meet up with K to spend time with him before and after his surgery. Haiti Cardiac Alliance is covering travel, room and board and all medical expenses for K, so we just need help with travel and room and board for his support person(s) which will likely be a rotation of 2 women from our Canadian team who can travel more easily. As you can imagine, this trip is both exciting and also very overwhelming for K who has not even travelled a lot within Haiti, so we are doing our best to make sure he has close friends with him as much as possible over the next few weeks.

Donations can be made to the general fund.

Thanks for your prayers and support!

“Attending the welding classes at Extollo was a priviledge that gave me so much hope following the last year full of stress after evacuating my home. I learned so many things; not just welding, but I also learned a lot about better systems of education. I feel like this type of school needs to be all over Haiti. If the schools in Haiti were like this, everything would change. The type of instruction, and the care with which it is given, shows how they truly want you to learn the absolute best way possible. I have never experienced this before in any type of education I have received or witnessed in Haiti. It was such a positive experience for me, and I want to thank everyone who participated in nominating and supporting me to attend this course”.

Shout out to ‘W’!!!!
This guy has persevered and finally had a major breakthrough in school this year!

‘W’ struggled for many years to read well, and thus his confidence with everything school related was an ongoing challenge. Especially in Haitian school where there are very few supports for kids who are ‘atypical’ learners.
We hired a tutor to work with him the last 4 years and even during the summers to find a way forward. It was very frustrating and daunting at times for everyone. But we didn’t give up, and ‘W’ kept showing up!

And this year, everything changed!

Not only did ‘W’ persevere after a very tumultuous year, but he also improved and grew so much confidence, and blew it out of the park in his final exams!
We are SO very proud and impressed with this young man!
Way to go ‘W’.
