The Espwa Foundation

The Espwa Foundation Espwa means "hope" in Haitian Creole. We serve in Cap Haitien, Haiti. From that starting point, the Espwa Foundation was born.

In 2009, a small group of friends with a shared love for Haiti and its people began focusing on a simple question: What does real long-term change look like for the medical community of Cap Haitien, Haiti? Espwa means “hope” in Haitian Creole. The Espwa team has since grown into a partnership of Haitians and Americans who catalyze positive change by empowering the medical leaders and big dreamers

in Cap Haitien. Though the medical community is still a primary focus, we’ve broadened our scope to empower farmers, families, and small businesses, as they’re all woven into the fabric of a stronger ‘Ayiti.’

The Espwa Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to serving our brothers and sisters in Cap Haitien, Haiti.

Dear Espwa Friends and Supporters,

After fifteen meaningful years of dedicated service, the Espwa Foundation has made the difficult but carefully considered decision to close its operations. In December 2025, we formally dissolved as an organization.
Since our founding, we have been privileged to raise and deploy over $1 million in support of projects centered in Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. Through partnerships with trusted local leaders, we worked together to provide medical care, education, clean water, housing, and opportunities that empowered individuals and communities—always striving to offer a hand up rooted in respect, relationship, and hope through Christ’s love.

None of this would have been possible without you. Your prayers, generous donations, volunteer service, and unwavering encouragement carried us forward and made a tangible difference in countless lives.

While our chapter as the Espwa Foundation now concludes, the impact of your support endures. We love the people & country of Haiti. We hold so many wonderful memories of our experiences there. We will continue to pray for the people.

We give thanks to God for the privilege of serving alongside so many of you.

To God be the Glory.

With profound sadness, Espwa announces the passing of our dear friend and partner, Dr. Eugene Maklin, who died on July 4 of a heart attack.

It is exceedingly difficult to articulate the extraordinary compassion and dedication of this saintly man, who tirelessly served the most vulnerable in Haiti. Dr. Maklin embodied the hands and feet of Christ, ministering to his Haitian brothers and sisters with unwavering love. We are deeply grateful for the privilege of partnering with him over the years.

In the days ahead, we will share further reflections and cherished stories of his kindness and enduring impact. We also commit to praying for his family, his remarkable medical legacy, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched.

To mark Agriculture and Labor Day on May 1st, several agricultural and agri-food exhibitions took place in Cap-Haïtien, as usual. In an exceptional atmosphere, everyone was able to taste local products. This event will last all weekend, or even the entire month.

Nan okazyon fèt agrikilti ak travay, 1e Me.
