SOIL (Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods)

SOIL (Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods) Together we’re building a regenerative urban sanitation service in Haiti that transforms 💩 into 🌺s, while tackling one of the world’s toughest challenges. ♻️ 🚛

Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods (SOIL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting soil resources, empowering communities and transforming wastes into resources in Haiti. We believe that the path to sustainability is through transformation, of both disempowered people and discarded materials, turning apathy into activism and pollution into valuable resources. SOIL promotes inte

grated approaches to the problems of poverty, poor public health, low agricultural productivity and environmental destruction. We attempt to nurture collective creativity through developing collaborative relationships between community organizations in Haiti and academics and activists internationally. Empowering communities, building the soil, nourishing the grassroots.

Happy Haitian Flag Day! 🇭🇹

Today commemorates the birth of the Haitian flag and the revolutionary spirit it came to represent.

In 1803, Jean-Jacques Dessalines ordered the white stripe to be removed from the French tricolor as a rejecting the violence of colonialism, and Catherine Flon sewed together the remaining red and blue bands under the enduring motto: “L’Union Fait La Force.”

As excitement builds for Haiti’s return to the World Cup, we’re reminded that culture, memory, music, and collective joy are essential acts of survival.

This year, alongside SOIL’s 20th anniversary and Juneteenth, our team will host a free public screening of the Haiti vs. Brasil match in celebration of liberation, resilience, and community.

Happy Flag Day to all those celebrating Haiti and stay tuned for our celebration in June!

Providing safe sanitation doesn't end when a toilet container is collected from a household. 🚛

What happens to the waste afterward matters just as much. 💩

For Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods (SOIL), the transformation of human waste into nutrient-rich compost is a core part of our model — as EkoLakay has grown, so too has the need to make our waste treatment process faster and more efficient. ♻️

SOIL's recently published peer-reviewed study in the Journal of Water Sanitation and Hygiene for Development takes a look at SOIL's composting facility, where we assess how the windrow method offers meaningful efficiency gains for a growing service. 🌱

We invite you to broaden your imagination this Earth Day. 🌎

What if companies served as levers for equality, the idea of ‘waste’ was made to be obsolete by circular processes, and every person – regardless of where they were born – had access to clean water and sanitation? 🌱

Our work begins here. In knowing that restoring ecosystems and restoring human dignity are linked causes — and that despite growing obstacles, it is within our power to reach a future that protects both.

Thank you to some of our corporate partners Global Water Intelligence (GWI) and Who Gives A Crap for channeling business into a vehicle for social impact.

Together, we can keep imagining — and building — a world where waste is part of the solution. 🚛

Happy Earth Day from the SOIL Haiti team! ♻️ 🌎

We have all had a moment where we needed a bathroom and couldn't find one.

For millions of families in urban Haiti without access to a toilet at home, this indignity impedes daily life.

SOIL has been working to change that. Our EkoLakay service brings a safe, in-home dry toilet to households in Cap-Haïtien — no infrastructure required, no water source needed, and resilient during flooding events.

Waste is collected weekly, treated safely, and transformed into compost. ♻️

This Earth Month, we're continuning the work that turns a public health crisis into an environmental solution.

The Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods (SOIL) Board made a long overdue visit to Cap-Haïtien, and we are still beaming with joy at having brought together so many incredible people to spend time with us in the place we love most.

Seeing Haiti once again through the eyes of others is always insightful, and our team put together a blog to memorialize the feelings and thoughts from this past board visit.

“After living in Haiti for 6 years, I should know that the story we hear about Haiti is, at best, only ever a tiny sliver of the full story - and yet, it was incredible to see Cap-Haitien so... normal.” - Erica Lloyd

"SOIL management’s ability to respond calmly and effectively to daily external surprises - big and small - and keep the rest of the ship sailing is impressive. So much is happening in Haiti, and so much more is possible.” - Alyse Schrecongost, MSc

SOIL is thrilled to welcome Mary Mehala to our Board of Directors! 🌱 🎉

For Mary, supporting safe sanitation means investing in the foundational infrastructure of Haiti's sovereignty and long-term success. ♻️

In her own words: "Something as fundamental as access to a clean, safe bathroom matters deeply to a person's dignity and wellbeing. Investors and funders want to see that the foundational work is taking hold - and with organizations like Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods (SOIL), we can see that it is. " 🌱

Welcome, Mary — we are lucky to have you! 🇭🇹

The promise of clean water begins long before it reaches the tap—it starts with safely managed sanitation. ♻️ 🚽 💧

On March 22, SOIL celebrated World Water Day in northern Haiti. Team members, led by Luckson and Maudeline, joined a lively water forum organized by OREPA Nord.

The event brought together students from Université d'État d'Haïti (UEH), Université Anténor Firmin (UNAF), and Université Roi Henry Christophe (URCH), alongside youth leaders from U-Report supported by UNICEF. 🇭🇹

Students gathered around the EkoLakay toilet demonstrations, engaged and asking questions about how the system works. When SOIL staff passed around samples of the finished compost, they flew like hotcakes—everyone wanted to get their hands on some soil!

Thanks to everyone who joined us to celebrate and raise awareness! 💧
