Within minutes of birth, a newborn’s first assessment begins.
Breathing.
Heart rate.
Color.
Tone.
Temperature.
At MamaBaby Haiti’s birth center, skilled midwives carefully evaluate each baby to ensure they are transitioning well from womb to world. Gentle hands check reflexes. Measurements are taken. The baby is kept warm and monitored closely during those critical first hours.
These early assessments matter.
They help identify breathing difficulties, infection risk, low birth weight, or other concerns before they become emergencies. When something needs attention, it is addressed quickly and calmly.

In a country where 1 in 23 infants do not reach their first birthday, timely newborn assessment can be life-saving.
Every baby deserves a safe start. And every safe start begins with careful, skilled hands. 🙏🏾

During a recent trip to Haiti, MamaBaby co-founder Jennifer Gallardo was reminded just how fragile and precious life is.

On her second day, she had the privilege of helping welcome twins into the world. One born at 7 a.m., the other at 7 p.m. 12 hours apart.

What began as a joyful day quickly turned when their mother experienced a life-threatening postpartum hemorrhage later that night. Because skilled midwives and lifesaving medications were there, her life was saved.

The next morning, Jennifer walked in to find the same mother sitting up, smiling, and holding her babies.

Moments like this are why MamaBaby exists - so Haitian mothers can bring life into the world and live to raise their children. ✨
