Haiti Development Institute

Haiti Development Institute Our vision is a Haiti built hand-in-hand with opportunity and equity for all.

Our mission is to build communities by supporting local leaders, strengthening organizations, and connecting stakeholders for systemic impact. We are a Haitian independent institution committed to community centered development. The Haiti Development Institute (HDI) is a legacy of The Haiti Fund, a five-year fund founded at The Boston Foundation, following the devastating 2010 earthquake. The five

-year Haiti Fund was established as an expression of the Greater Boston community’s concern for the people of Haiti and their local Boston friends and relatives. The Haiti Development Institute (HDI) was created to address the deficiencies and inefficiencies in the deployment of philanthropic capital and to increase the intended impact of grassroots organizations in Haiti. Our mission is to build sustainable communities by supporting local leaders, strengthening organizations, and connecting sectors to achieve transformative systemic impact. Through HDI’s work over the past six years, we have come to the conclusion that for too long aid has generally failed Haiti; instead of building local capacity, it has largely supported donor-driven short-term projects. As a result while the nonprofit sector provides tremendous value to communities, it is unable to help local communities outpace poverty and overcome crippling social inequities. Building a new Haiti will only be possible if strong civil society organizations are at the forefront of that change increasing civic engagement, leading communities to take part in and/or lead their own development. HDI is built on the belief that an integrated approach to development is necessary to usher in real social change in Haiti. We know that local leaders, civil society organizations, and social entrepreneurs have the potential to bring about transformative changes to benefit local communities and engender systemic change throughout the country. HDI operates by acting as a:

1) Major investor in nonprofits through our organizational capacity building program for leaders and mission-driven Haitian-led organizations; 2) Philanthropic intermediary and advisor for philanthropists and foundations looking to invest in Haitian organizations or guidance inform their grant making; 3) Open-sourced warehouse for research and data for implementers and funders alike; and 4) Civic leader, connector, and convener, leading cross-sector conversations to help identify and drive levers of change.

We are very proud to have prepared our first Five-Year Impact Report. (You can view it as a flipbook or download it as a PDF). In it, you will see the results we have achieved in the last five years with the generous support of our donors and partners.

We are proud of the numbers contained in this report -- $2.35 million dollars put directly in the hands of communities to advance their development visions; over 300 leaders from 100 organizations supported to grow their organizations. We are excited that the transformative Kolektif Arcadins regional development initiative we lead is fully developed and now being implemented. We are proud of the learning, planning and mobilization we have made possible through support of constant convening of local leaders in Haiti and philanthropic leaders in the US.

What the numbers cannot fully convey, however, is the main impact of our work - community members galvanized to come together to build equitable communities where everyone has a stake. It is this spirit of community and solidarity that will bring durable change in Haiti.

The report also shares where we will go in the next five years. We have laid the groundwork to expand our capacity building to the public sector through local government professional training and to expand our community investments to include loans and recoverable grants to social enterprises.

We are grateful for the strong support of our donors that enables HDI to provide the resources, tools and connections Haitian communities need to build the peaceful, prosperous future they deserve.

In collaboration with partners, HDI has brought together 250 farmers from around southern Haiti to discuss their vision for economic and agricultural development in the region and identify the best strategies to pursue it.

This is the first in a series of events providing a platform for farmers and local agricultural organizations to engage in the national effort spearheaded by the Food Systems Alliance, a coalition of 15+ Haitian organizations, to build a more resilient, equitable and sustainable food system in Haiti through collaboration, innovation, and long-term investments.

We are grateful for the support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation of the HFSA and these important convenings to facilitate Haitian-led development.
