πŸŽ‰ Exciting news from our sister association across the Atlantic!

We're delighted to share that the American Association of Australasian Literary Studies (AAALS) has announced their 2026 Virtual Seminar Series β€” and the lineup looks wonderful.

In place of their regular conference this June, AAALS will be hosting a series of free, public panels on Zoom covering a rich range of topics in Australasian literary studies:

πŸ“… 16–17 June β€” Imperfect Literacy and Authorial Resistance: Writing and Censorship in Australian Literary History
πŸ“… 18–19 June β€” The Romantic Frontier in Australia and the United States: Reflections and Receptions
πŸ“… 22–23 June β€” Reading for Connection: Approaches to Literatures from the Asia-Pacific
πŸ“… 25–26 June β€” Contemporary Australian Women's Writing on War
πŸ“… 29–30 June β€” Genre and Subjectivity in Asian Australian Literature

All sessions are free and open to the public via Zoom.

Somebody has to say it.

The humanities are being managed like a budget line. Australian Studies scholars know this intimately β€” from Canberra to Copenhagen, the logic is the same: prove your worth in economic terms, or make room for something that can.

Graeme Turner asked the question plainly before he died: Why do they hate us?

We don't have a simple answer. But we have two days, scholars from four continents, and a deep conviction that thinking against the grain is not a retreat β€” it's a method.

Thinking Against the Grain: Australian Studies in Times of Constraint

Online Symposium Β· 27–28 November 2026

We are calling for papers, project presentations, and book presentations across four thematic areas: climate change and environmental justice; settler colonialism and multiculturalism; geopolitics and transnational relations; and Indigenous and non-Indigenous ways of knowing.

Paper abstracts due 1 October 2026.

Project and book proposals due 1 September 2026.

All proposals to: [email protected]

What does it mean to think against the grain when the academy is increasingly run like a business? That is the question at the heart of our upcoming online symposium.

Thinking Against the Grain: Australian Studies in Times of Constraint brings together scholars from Europe, Australia, North America and the Global South for two days of conversation about the enduring relevance of humanities scholarship β€” in Australian Studies and beyond.

We invite proposals for 15-minute papers, project presentations, and book presentations across four thematic strands: climate change and environmental justice; settler colonialism and multiculturalism; geopolitics and transnational relations; and Indigenous and non-Indigenous ways of knowing.

Deadlines:
πŸ“Œ Project & book proposals β€” 1 September 2026
πŸ“Œ Paper abstracts (ca. 300 words + 100-word bio) β€” 1 October 2026

Send all proposals to: [email protected]

The symposium takes place 27–28 November 2026 via Zoom, with the timetable designed to accommodate participants across time zones..
