📅On October 30th and 31st, SPUR partners met in Milan to share the findings from their needs analysis conducted between March and October 2024. This research aimed to identify the key social needs and challenges faced by both young and senior citizens after the COVID-19 pandemic.

👥Our 🇭🇷Croatian🇭🇷 partner, Vodnjan-Dignano: Grad priča - Città da raccontare, reported that some negative impacts from Covid-19 are still felt in its communities, such as social withdrawal and community inertia and overuse of social media. The participants of the focus groups shared their worries concerning people viewing low and distant socialisation as the new norm even after Covid-19 and the increasing time spent on social media leading to an increase in the number of negative comments on social media.

📌These insights are crucial as they help us better understand the ongoing impact of the pandemic and how to support our communities effectively. Stay tuned for more updates on our initiatives!

☕World cafes☕

✨ Recap of the SPUR Event in Milan ✨ Part 2

On October 31st, SPUR Partners met to discuss the topic “Local pilot actions for social cohesion in the neighbourhoods: planning the strategy” through the coffee table technique.

The coffee tables highlighted three topics:

1) ☕ Meetings: citizens appreciate in-person interaction. Inclusive and considerate communication between institutions and citizenship is essential for the success of events and of citizen engagement. The partners agreed on the usefulness of peer reviews and peers’ exchange to discover new tools and strategies for citizen engagement.

2) 🫂 Integration: All partners agreed that personal invitations delivered to citizens are essential tool in citizen engagement’s strategies in addition to combine cultural activities with political discussions. Creating inclusive, safe, and attractive spaces is crucial as well.

3) 💡Resources: Clear communication on resources is necessary. Community engagement through experts, civic activators, and ambassadors helps legitimise administrative actions. Proper legal frameworks, funding, accessible spaces, and stakeholder involvement are essential. A collaborative platform can facilitate idea sharing and interaction between citizenship and the administration.

SPUR - What Democracy Can Be

✨ Recap of the SPUR Event in Milan ✨ Part 1

🌟 During the public event on 31st October, "Initiatives and Lessons Learnt from European Cities”, ALDA’s Secretary General Antonella Valmorbida described the SPUR project as one of the “expressions of what democracy can be”.

🗣️ From isolation to re-inclusion, the partners of the SPUR projects and the guest representative of Metropolis shared their experiences in addressing socialisation needs and implementing social resilience practices post-pandemic.

🏙️ The pandemic transformed our cities, institutions, societies, and ways of socialising. It provided an opportunity to reflect on the real needs of our communities. Topics like adapting institutional communication, organising intergenerational and inclusive social events, and promoting the concept of communal care—not just in medical terms—were at the heart of the inspiring debate among the panellists. 🌍💬

The SPUR project brings together cities from five different European countries to develop and implement initiatives that promote social solidarity, active civic participation, and the improvement of quality of life in urban areas. The project is funded by the European Union’s CERV program (Citizens, Equality, Rights, and Values) and is based on a participatory approach, involving citizens in the decision-making process and the creation of activities that will have a positive impact on communities.
