Many people on island and around the social media world cannot help to feel the irony from the latest Bay Islands Conservation association social media post. celebrating decades of conservation commitment and displaying sponsored international funding from Ridge to Reef dedication for sustainability.
Actions speak louder than words. With massive projects with questionable permits & practices being signed off by the municipal with what seems to be minimal oversight or enforcement by BICA. We can now understand that this area of development & bureaucracy is no longer covered BICA or any laws can be enforced and monitored by BICA or the Roatán Marine Park.
Coral restoration, children’s programs, mangrove restoration projects all valid and ethical things to be working on. But looking to the future we can assume that Roatán will see many more projects like the one pictured below to unfold in ways that won’t be regulated and in anyway developers like when the money being passed between island officials.
This kind of development as pictured below changes the watershed, changes the flora and fauna, changes the natural aquifer. Questions like, where the portable water will come from and where the sewage/grey water will be treated for all the condos & businesses etc that are planned to be built. What about the rain water run off… how will that be controlled as at the bottom of excavation is a public road and private properties before the beautiful camp bay beach where historically turtles have nested.
