G&S: site visit to Relocation of Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to Caverns 🏗️⛏️

ICE HKA G&S organised a site visit to the Relocation of Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to caverns on Saturday 9 May 2026. 📅 A group of 28 participants was provided with a valuable opportunity to understand the relocation of Hong Kong's largest sewage treatment works into caverns, including its background, cavern construction, innovative technologies, environmental measures, and community engagement efforts. 🌿🏙️

The event was divided into three main parts: a project presentation at the community liaison centre (CLC), an assisted reality experience at the CAVE room and an outdoor briefing near the project site. Site representatives welcomed our members at the CLC and delivered a detailed presentation on the background and key features of the project. Participants leveraged assisted reality technology to experience a virtual simulation of the underground construction environment. 🌐

An outdoor tour near the project site was held, with participants gathered at the roundabout outside the works area for a site briefing by the project team. From this location, participants were able to relate the information from the earlier presentation and CAVE experience to the actual site conditions. It also allowed participants to appreciate the engineering challenges of delivering a large-scale underground sewage treatment facility within a developed urban area, while maintaining environmental control and minimising disturbance to the surrounding community. 🏗️🌱

G&S: site visit to Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant 💧🌊

ICE HKA G&S paid a visit to the Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant on Saturday, 14 March 2026. Our group of 27 participants were first given an introduction to the project at the site office, followed by a site visit to the reverse osmosis facilities and the strategic water infrastructure under operation. ⚙️🏗️

During the visit to the Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant, site representatives welcomed our members at the site office and provided an overview of the project, including its objectives and key challenges. The plant utilises advanced reverse osmosis technology with a daily capacity of 135 million litres, contributing to Hong Kong’s water security by diversifying its water sources. 💧🌍 The design features a marine intake system extending into the sea, coupled with outfall diffusers that manage brine discharge and minimise environmental impact. 🔀

The facility incorporates sophisticated pre‑treatment and energy recovery systems, as well as multi‑stage treatment processes—pre‑treatment, reverse osmosis and post‑treatment—ensuring high‑quality water production while optimising efficiency. ♻️⚡ Integrated water resource management and smart operational systems enable real‑time monitoring and performance enhancement throughout the process. 📊📈 The site also demonstrated innovative environmental monitoring and advanced facility management methodologies, highlighting Hong Kong’s commitment to sustainable, cutting‑edge coastal water infrastructure. 🌱🏗️ The visit showcased how cutting‑edge desalination technology, strategic planning and environmental stewardship can be successfully integrated into a large‑scale water resource project. 💡
