STOP updates: Post-Disaster Peer Support Training
STOP was keeping a close eye on community needs after the Tai Po Fire incident. As STOP has strong ties with MDW community, it found that the MDWs directly affected by the disaster, especially Bahasa-Indonesia speakers, had little access to emotional support due to language barriers. Meanwhile, MDWs typically turn to friends or fellow workers for help and comfort.

In response to the identified service gap, STOP and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Hong Kong with the shared concern co-held a Post-Disaster Peer Support Training for MDW community leaders on 14 December 2025. Psychologists and professional counsellors from MSF explained stress after crisis, practical skills to cope with emotions, and Psychological First Aids (PFA) principles, while STOP Program Manager, Dr. Chole Martin gave self-care tips for carers. Bahasa-Indonesia translation was also provided on site.

About 40 community leaders became more equipped to support fire-affected and other trauma-affected MDWs. They shared what they learned:
- “(How to) be a good listener and understand someone’s behaviour and characteristics. Ways and means of giving support to a person who are in trauma and feeling depressed.”
- “Let’s also have boundaries and self-care (when we help others), this is what I love hearing.”

STOP Workshop Highlight: Social Care for Migrant Domestic Workers through Theatre Games

On two weekends starting November 9, 2025, STOP hosted the “Applied Theatre for Social Care Workshop,” engaging 12 migrant workers in a transformative experience. This initiative was facilitated by five students from Shaw College at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, with support from TEFO (Hong Kong Drama/Theatre and Education Forum)

Over these 6-day workweek, these migrant workers, who typically endure a demanding workweek, participated in various theatre games that fostered storytelling, peer connection, and personal reflection. The workshop provided a refreshing break from their daily stresses, enhancing trust and creativity among participants while promoting communication and mutual care.

Insights from Participants:
🗣️ I truly enjoy the ‘ride game’ and love being the driver! I make sure not to bump along the way. I cherish these games and sharing sessions as they're completely stress-free. Let’s keep doing good, enjoy the ride, and be careful.” (Driver and Car Game)
🗣️ “Our life is like a traffic light. When we feel tired, we need to stop, relax, and be calm so we can move on with the green light. This activity is very good for all MDWs. We should have it at least THREE times a year!” (Red & Green Light Game)
🗣️ “It’s an amazing and enjoyable moment to reconnect with our life, entrusting our mind and body performances in everything we do.”

This workshop not only enriched the participants' lives but also provided the student leaders with invaluable hands-on experience in social care, deepening their understanding of migrant domestic workers' challenges and aspirations through their heartfelt reflections.

At STOP, we often highlight our work with Migrant Domestic Workers—but human trafficking impacts many types of migrants and even local Hong Kongers.

In 2024, STOP met a young Indonesian man who had paid an agent over $30,000 for what he believed was a legal job in Hong Kong. Upon arrival, he discovered it was a deceptive recruitment scam: he had unknowingly overstayed his visa, had no way home, and was sleeping rough on the streets.

STOP provided shelter, legal advice, food, transport, and ultimately the means to return to Indonesia. Through him, we met another young Indonesian man in the same plight—and went on to support many more.

Fast forward a year: in an Indonesian District Court, the agent was found guilty of human trafficking, sentenced to jail, and ordered to pay restitution to our former clients.

Without STOP’s support, these young men—and countless others trapped by deceptive recruitment—would face prosecution for overstaying, with no way home. They’d remain vulnerable to further trafficking, unable to legally support themselves in Hong Kong or afford repatriation.

One mother, upon learning her son was coming home, wrote: “Last night I received a message about my son from you. Oh God, I really want to thank you so much for wanting to help my child. Honestly, I cried reading your message. You are so kind. Here, I really want to thank you for all your help. Your SMS truly feels like it boosts our spirits as parents. Once again, we sincerely thank you very much.”

Please help us continue this life-changing work to protect victims of deceptive recruitment scams by supporting Branches of Hope.

World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

Human trafficking is on the rise due to global crises, conflicts, and socio-economic inequalities💸. To end human trafficking, we must strengthen resilience against exploitation and raise awareness about the issue. 💪Governments and civil society must assess and enhance their efforts to prevent human trafficking, identify and support victims, and increase awareness of this issue.

In honour of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on 30 July, the STOP program organized a transformative workshop, “Capturing Moments of Our Lives in Hong Kong.” This initiative empowered migrant domestic workers from our community to learn photography, giving them a creative voice to share their stories of challenge, resilience, dreams, and joy. Their evocative photographs offer a glimpse into their lives, celebrating their strength and humanity.

Swipe right to explore their inspiring work and see Hong Kong through their eyes!

Join us and support our efforts to end human trafficking in Hong Kong. Together, we can ensure that no one is left behind 🙌!

STOP 早前為舉辦咗一個名為「Capturing Moments of Our Lives in Hong Kong」嘅攝影工作坊。
