【See Beyond the Canvas, Understand Art|Three Theory Courses That Help You See the World Through Art】

Walking through a museum, you may come across works you don't quite understand. It's not that you don't understand art – you're just missing the key to unlock it.
Marxism, postmodernism, feminism – these are not just academic jargon. They are the codes that help us grasp artistic creation. From Wong Kar-wai's films to Foucault's philosophy, from Leung Ping-kwan's poetry to Barthes' sensory critique – art has never belonged only to artists. It belongs to everyone willing to think.
Whether you are an art lover, a social worker, an educator or simply someone looking for a space to contemplate – these three courses will spur you to see the world from different perspectives.
📖 From Art to Cultural Theory
Led by Dr. Fong Ho Yin, who teaches literary and cultural studies at various tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, through paintings, poetry, photography and film, this course introduces major cultural theorists with a focus on contemporary issues. It explores how cultural theory is embedded within art — from Leung Ping-kwan, Baudelaire and Wong Kar-wai to Foucault and Barthes — allowing you to experience theory as it emerges from art, rather than forcing theoretical frameworks onto artistic works.
📖 Contemporary Art Theory
Dr. Leung Kwong Yiu, PhD in Philosophy from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a major in Aesthetics, introduces key theoretical frameworks including Marxism, hermeneutics, semiotics, postmodernism, feminism and pluralism, and teaches you how to apply them to the creation and evaluation of contemporary art.
📖 Happiness Awakens: Mental Health, Art and Community Development
Join Sophie Cheung, a Hong Kong-based artist, poet and disability justice activist, as she guides you through artistic creation, participants explore self-discovery, reimagine the possibilities of community services and rights advocacy, and collaborate on inclusive community art projects.
