Rotary Kowloon Golden Mile The liveliest & friendliest Rotary Club in Hong Kong

We conduct our meetings in English (with Indian characteristics!), but
our members speak Cantonese, Mandarin, Banana, Indian (Hindi, Sindhi & Apache), German, French, Spanish, Danish, Australian, Klingon, Um-Foo-Foo and Swahili. Our club has a balanced percentage of Chinese, Indian and Western members, and we are extremely proud that about 30% of our membership are ladies. The "Westerners" include some Australians, Englishmen, Scotsmen and Canadians, but, since we are such tolerant people, we even allowed some Germans, Americans, an Irishman and other people with terrible dress sense and silly dances to join, but we accept absolutely no responsibility for their unruly behaviour ! Lunch is only HK$350 (US$45) per person (cash, major credit cards, baseball cards and
food stamps accepted), for a 3 course meal (regular, vegetarian or intravenous menu). This low price includes one standard drink (b**r, w**e, popular spirits, soft drinks, Mad Dog 20/20, rocket fuel, castor oil and something which looks remarkably like grandma's h***h, but without those endearing lumpy bits). Great guest speakers every week (OK, OK, not counting those rare times when we let PP Louis Thomas tell corny jokes, which nobody ever understands!). We meet right in the heart of the Golden Mile shopping area, directly above
Tsimshatsui MTR station, and we have no enforced dress code !

Area 7 Joint Clubs DG Visit & Dinner on 7th August!

RCKGM joined fellow Area 7 clubs on Friday 7 August for the District Governor visit and dinner at Loong Yuen, B1, Holiday Inn Golden Mile, 50 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. We were honoured to welcome District Governor CP Jimmy Lau.

The afternoon began at 2:30pm with the DG meeting with individual clubs, followed by pre-dinner drinks at 7:00pm and a Chinese banquet with Area 7 clubs at 7:30pm. Clubs from across the area were together for the evening — RC Kowloon, RC Kowloon North, RC Peninsula, RC Tsim Sha Tsui, RC Kowloon Golden Mile, RC Peninsula South, RC Homantin Hill, RC Dragon Hong Kong, and RC Peninsula East.

Regular Lunch Meeting on 12th August!

A good meeting today — thank you President Steven. We gathered at the Crystal Meeting Room, Basement B3, Holiday Inn Golden Mile, from 12:30pm, with cocktails and meet-and-greet before President Steven welcomed members and guests and gave club updates.

The quiz was followed by an interesting session from Miwa Chan Sukendar, Executive Director of International Justice Mission (IJM) Hong Kong, on Ending Slavery & Violence: At a Historic Pace & Global Scale. We closed with the lucky draw.

Lunch was Japanese, and really good — our lunches take us to a different country each meeting. A nice amount was raised. See you next time.

Board and Regular Club Dinner Meeting!

It was great to see a high turnout at last Wednesday’s Board and regular Club dinner meeting. The Board met with a quorum at 6:03, and a big thank you to members who came on to dinner and brought guests. We were delighted to welcome visiting Rotarian Syed from RC Karachi — he is clearly enjoying KGM, and why wouldn’t he: two dinner meetings in a row he has taken the lucky draw, a bottle of Macallan!

We started the evening with a minute’s silence to mark the passing of PP Louis. Thanks to Terence, who paid tribute in a short speech.

PE Steven gave an update on the charity ball and encouraged members to buy tickets. The speaker session was more interactive than a speech, and the questions from the floor said it all. Thanks to Dinesh for bringing in the speaker, and to PP Maki for liaising.

Chris Tan announced that we had successfully recruited our first adopter for Adopt a Grandparent, and walked members through brief bios of other potential candidates — a project she initiated and saw through. Heartfelt thanks to her.

Secretary Pooja conducted her first quiz, which was fun and raised $440. Fellowship Director Dinesh once again organised a fine evening, with Krish putting together the night’s presentation. The lucky draw netted $900, and at least two raffle ticket booklets were sold.

Everyone’s attendance, support and contributions are greatly appreciated. See you at the club installation on 10 June — a lunch meeting at HIGM. Details to follow from Dinesh.

Dear KGMERS,

Many thanks for taking time out of your busy schedules to attend today’s lunch meeting. We had a wonderful speaker, Uzma Naveed, introduced thanks to Rotarian Jackson, who shared valuable insights into the plight of refugees in Hong Kong. A special thank you to PP Maki for liaising with the speaker.

Heartfelt thanks as well to Fellowship Director Dinesh, who once again did an excellent job organising today’s event. Thank you to PE Steven for delivering the vote of thanks, and to Jackson for introducing Uzma.

I understand that some of you may have visited the refugee center in TST—I hope it went well.

The lucky draw raised $1,600.

Thank you again for your attendance, support, and contributions. They are greatly appreciated.
