🎓2026 Shaw Prize Masterclass- Mathematical Sciences | Emmanuel Candès’ Work

🔢To address pure mathematics or applied mathematics — that is not a question for Professor Emmanuel Candès, as he brings both together, becoming one of this year’s Shaw Laureates in Mathematical Sciences.

🧑‍🏫Let’s hear from Professor Ngaiming Mok, Chair of the Selection Committee for the Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences, as he shares how Professor Candès has achieved groundbreaking results across disciplines through the power of mathematical analysis.

🎓2026 Shaw Prize Masterclass- Mathematical Sciences | Mathematical Analysis

🔢You know the word “mathematics.” You know the word “analysis.” But what happens when they come together as “mathematical analysis”?

This year, the Shaw Laureates in Mathematical Sciences Professors Emmanuel Candès and Camillo De Lellis were honoured for their use of deep techniques from mathematical analysis to inspire progress across disciplines beyond math, as well as to tackle classical problems that have long existed in the field.

🧑‍🏫Let’s hear from Professor Ngaiming Mok, Chair of the Selection Committee for the Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences, to decode what mathematical analysis really means and explore why it’s at the heart of so many discoveries.

🎓2026 Shaw Prize Masterclass- Life Science and Medicine | Treating APL at Its Root

🧬Now we understand the cause of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) through the groundbreaking discoveries of the 2026 Shaw Laureates in Life Science and Medicine, let’s dive into the therapy they developed — an approach that goes straight to the root of the disease.

How innovative is this therapy, and how effective has it proven to be?

👩‍🏫Let’s hear from Professor Bonnie Bassler, Chair of the Selection Committee for the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine.

🎓2026 Shaw Prize Masterclass- Life Science and Medicine | Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL)

🧬Awarded the 2026 Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine, Professors Anne Dejean, Hugues de Thé, and Zhu Chen transformed our understanding of APL and turned it from fatal to curable.

But what is APL? And what goes wrong in APL?

🎓2026 Shaw Prize Masterclass-Astronomy | Laureates’ Contributions

After we explored supernovae and stellar nucleosynthesis (catch up on our earlier episodes!), we’ll apply these concepts to the work of the 2026 Shaw Laureates in Astronomy, Professors Ken’ichi Nomoto and Stanford Woosley.

For decades, they have asked a deceptively simple question: how do stars die❓

👨‍🏫Let’s hear from Professor Scott D Tremaine, Chair of the Selection Committee for The Shaw Prize in Astronomy.

🌏At the highly anticipated Press Conference last week, we shared the exciting announcement of 2026 Shaw Laureates with audiences around the world!

🎉This year, we are pleased to honour seven distinguished Laureates based in China, Japan, France, and the United States, and to celebrate with them, their institutions, and the international scientific community.

Their groundbreaking contributions, whether achieved through close collaboration or independent pursuit, demonstrate how diverse approaches can collectively advance knowledge and drive meaningful progress. Together, these efforts enrich the global body of research and inspire future generations of scientists and innovators.

Let’s revisit the highlights of this memorable event🎬!

🎓2026 Shaw Prize Masterclass-Astronomy | Stellar Nucleosynthesis

In this animation, we take you deeper into stellar nucleosynthesis — the process through which supernovae create and distribute the elements in our Universe.

✨Inside stars, lighter elements like hydrogen and helium fuse together, forming heavier ones such as carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, while releasing tremendous energy.

When a massive star explodes, the extreme temperatures and pressures enable the formation of even heavier elements — up to iron and beyond. These newly formed elements are expelled into space, forming new stars and planets, as well as…

👉YOU — as these elements are integral to the chemical makeup of our bodies.

🔭 With these concepts in mind, in our next episode, we’ll explore the achievements of the 2026 Shaw Laureates in Astronomy — stay tuned!

🎓2026 Shaw Prize Masterclass-Astronomy | Supernovae

Last week, we revealed the 2026 Shaw Prize winners, including Professors Ken’ichi Nomoto and Stanford Woosley, who are recognised for their contributions to the study of supernovae.

Before we dive into the Laureates’ contributions, let’s first understand some key concepts: What are supernovae, and what role do they play❓

👨‍🏫Let’s hear from Professor Scott D Tremaine, Chair of the Selection Committee for The Shaw Prize in Astronomy.
