Major Ivory Seizure in Vietnam

We are hearing news that the Vietnamese authorities have seized nearly 1.2 tons of ivory in the port of Quy Nhon, representing about 221 tusks. Also in the shipment were found 79kg of big cat bones.

The articles were sealed inside modifies logs from the Republic of Congo. The good news is that authorities have detained several suspects and we sincerely hope this leads to others in the chain being caught. In the meantime the problem is that there is still a huge demand for ivory and other rare animal parts in the Asian region and until the demand stops the killing will continue. Only elephants need ivory …… its hardly a sign of class and prestige to display ivory on a shelf, in full knowledge of how it gets to that shelf and the pain and suffering endured by baby elephants left behind.

There are only 415,000 elephants left in the wild, when will our unadulterated greed wake up and realise that we need to save them before its too late?

Today we honour the legacy of George Adamson, “Father of Lions’’, who died on 20th August 1989 at his beloved Kora while saving the lives of his staff and a guest after they were attacked by bandits.

George gave his heart to the African wilderness and he taught the world that all wildlife should be free. His pioneering work in releasing captive lions into the wild and his wife Joy’s books of their life and work together inspired generations of conservationists.

Today his legacy live in at Kora National Park in Kenya where he rests alongside his brother Terrence and the lions Boy (the star of the Oscar wining film Born Free), Super Cub and Mugi

Today, we learned the sad news that Baraka, the beloved black rhino of Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, passed away on 16 August at the remarkable age of 31.
Born at Ol Pejeta, Baraka became an ambassador for his species.

During his life, he lost sight in one eye following a territorial clash and later became completely blind after developing cataracts in his remaining eye. Unable to safely navigate and forage in the wild, he was moved to a large protected enclosure where he could receive the care and support he needed.

Rather than keeping Baraka at a distance, Ol Pejeta embraced a unique approach to conservation education. Students, families, and visitors were given the opportunity to get close to him and learn about the challenges facing rhinos today. Baraka always had the choice to approach people or keep his distance, and more often than not, he chose to engage. Those special encounters helped create lasting memories and inspired countless people to care more deeply about the future of this iconic species.

Our Chairman, Colin Dawson was fortunate enough to spend time with Baraka during a visit to Ol Pejeta, alongside the inspirational James Mwenda. Together with the dedicated rangers and conservation teams, James and Baraka have played an invaluable role in raising awareness and promoting the protection of rhinos across Africa.

Baraka’s legacy extends far beyond the enclosure he called home. Through the connections he forged with people from around the world, he became a powerful symbol of conservation, resilience, and hope.
Rest in peace, Baraka. You will not be forgotten. 🦏💚

Today is World Lion Day.

Lions represent ultimate strength, but they face significant threats from habitat loss and human wildlife conflict. With their population reduced from around 500,000 in 1950 to 100,000 in 1990 to as few as 20,000 today they need our help to survive.

George Adamson, Father of the Lions (1906 to 1989) dedicated his life to conservation of lions and their habitat . He wrote Who will now care for the animals, for they cannot look after themselves? Are there young men and women who are willing to take on this charge?“ Today, innovators like Richard Turere answer that call. He invented Lion Lights, a clever, low-cost solar system. It flashes lights to mimic a human with a torch, deterring lions from attacking livestock. This stops farmers from killing lions in retaliation.

Now in over 14,000 farmsteads through Africa Lion Lights has proven itself to be amazingly effective. At only USD25 per unit its as low cost as it is simple yet protects the most valuable asset many farmers have.

Ambrose is one of The Elephant Foundation Herd members, coming to Hong Kong in November 2025 to be a part of our Elephant Week where we visit schools to raise awareness over the plight of endangered animals, community in conservation and the importance of conserving the habitat they share. Kaden, seen in these photos is a student in Hong Kong who, after one of our talks, expressed an interest in doing on-the-ground conservation work.
With the significant help of Letoluai Ambrose and Richard Turere Kaden has spent the last three weeks in Kenya learning and getting involved at grass roots level.
