Flock is a community art project in Hong Kong that is bringing Lantau island's native birds to life through murals on abandoned buildings and walls across the island.

The Kingfisher is looking a little dishevelled… and this is why….

This wall was one of the toughest we’ve worked on, with lots of holes that needed filling so we could get the detail right. Unfortunately, the filler we used clearly wasn’t designed for Hong Kong’s extreme weather, and parts of it are now falling out.
Flock has always been a bit of a learning curve. These murals are exposed to sun, rain, humidity and time, and we’re figuring it out as we go along. The good news is it can be repaired properly with better materials, ready for Rob Aspire’s return.
We’re aiming for October 2026 for Flock Series 3.

Flock Series 3

Been really blown away by the dedication of some of the community to get out and see all the birds. Here are two recent maps shared with us. If you're doing a hike to see the murals please share pics with us, its great to see updates on how the murals are changing, like this Shrike mural on sunset peak, love how its aged.

Doing a little gardening this week…
One of the nicest parts of returning to these murals is seeing how much the locations change. Vines creeping over the walls, colours fading in the sun, everything slowly blending back into the landscape.

Some behind-the-scenes from Flock Series 2: picking the birds is the fun part, mixing the colours is a bit of a science, and hauling ladders, cutting back dead trees, and sneaking around fences is… well, a challenge. All worth it for the view! Can’t wait to start Series 3 later this year.

Where it all started…. First Flock bird right outside my house. Why ? Cause there was already an outdoor galley I’d started with a friend and this big wall of an abandoned home needed something special. Then I saw all these other abandoned homes and thought… let’s keep going.

Some of you might not know, there’s a Flock bird sitting on top of Sunset Peak.
With each series of 8, we try to create one show stopper, something that pushes the project a bit further, literally in this case.
This one took serious effort. Paint, ladders and gear were all carried up the mountain by the artist and a few very committed friends of Flock.
The homeowner had a great idea to put the bird on the roof. It keeps people from wandering too close to the house, and you can only really see it properly from a distance, looking down.
Probably the most peaceful bird in the whole project.
Let’s hope it stays drone free.
Big thanks to Emily Ho for sharing this photo.
If you spot any of the birds, send us your photos. They change with the weather, and it’s great to see them through different eyes.
