Amplify your impact! Donating to tax-exempt charities (Section 88) in Hong Kong by March 31 allows you to deduct donations of HK$100 or more from your 2025/26 taxable income, capped at 35% of your total income.

Grassroots Future runs programs over 3 pillars: education, well-being and community outreach.

We run activities for both children and adults in the refugee and asylum seeker community, which are free to join. These programs are also co-curated by the community and provide opportunities for leadership and agency within the community. We also support children with their textbook expenses and run vocational education activities for adults.

We are currently looking for support to cover our 2026 programs and some operational expenses. Please consider supporting our work to empower the local refugee and asylum seeker community today!

✨️ Education Program Update: TE(A)CH at the Grassroots

It's only fitting that on Christmas Day, we acknowledge the wonderful support of Operation Santa Claus!

At the end of November, we wrapped up our beginner and advanced IT program.

Our advanced students, with the support of learnt how to build their own Wix sites to showcase handicrafts as well as food orders.

Our beginner students over a twenty week period were exposed to basic digital literacy and coached by past students from Refugeek programs. Lessons ranged on how to use Google Docs, Sheets and Canva. Our students delivered presentations at the end of the program on a topic of their choice.

We are so proud of everyone who took the program this year and gained confidence using digital tools and building their own projects. Thanks to Refugeek for their ongoing support and Operation Santa Claus for their support of this program, venue partner and our instructors Denis, Bonnie and Sandra for making this possible.

Did you know - September 30 is our anniversary and this year marks a special milestone for Grassroots Future — five years of working alongside refugee communities to build brighter, more sustainable futures. What began as a small initiative has grown into a charity rooted in collaboration, resilience, and impact.

Our 2023–2024 Impact Report highlights the incredible journeys of the people and communities we serve, the programs we’ve co-created, and the partnerships that make our work possible. From education and mentorship, to cultural exchange and livelihood projects, every story in this report reflects the power of community-led change.

Over the past year, we’ve deepened our commitment to amplifying refugee voices, creating platforms for storytelling, and expanding opportunities for growth and leadership. None of this would have been possible without the dedication of our volunteers, the trust of our community partners, and the generosity of our supporters.

As we celebrate five years of impact, we also look ahead with hope and determination. The work continues — to foster inclusion, build capacity, and champion the rights and dignity of refugee communities. Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we are planting the seeds for a more equitable future.

At the end of August, we wrapped up our second cohort of the kid's IT/STEM program.

With a group of under 11s, over an 8 week intensive, they were introduced to programming with microbit and developed several motors and lofi robots which they programmed with the tool. Some of their projects included a robot crab 🦀, a dice and a motorised windmill.

Thanks to Operation Santa Claus HK 愛心聖誕大行動 for making this program possible, venue partner Dream Impact 夢創成真 and our instructors Denis, Bonnie and Sandra for making this possible.

This program is supported by as part of the Empowering Diversity Grant and the goal is to create sustainable leadership for community leaders from migrant domestic worker (MDW) and refugee communities. We're looking forward to sharing our outputs from the program as leaders work on their own projects using the skills they have learnt in the program.

For the past five years, Grassroots Future has run an annual appeal to support parents to cover textbook expenses, ensuring children can begin each school year with the materials they need. This year, we’re overjoyed to share that as of the start of the appeal, we have already reached our 2025 target—helping 39 children and counting with their textbook costs, and well on track to support 40 children before year’s end. We have also shared some of the comments from parents about why this support matters.

In Hong Kong, refugee and asylum seeker families live under immense pressure. Without the legal right to work, every day is a fight to cover basic needs. For their children—growing up in a city they call home but cannot fully belong to—education is the one constant source of hope.

Yet even hope comes with a price. Textbooks, a simple but vital tool for learning, can cost families thousands of dollars each year. For parents barred from earning a legal income, these costs can be crushing.

High school textbook prices have soared—now topping HKD5,000 for some students—and the need will only grow. That’s why every dollar we raise above our 2025 goal will go directly towards the 2026 textbook appeal, so we can start the year ahead strong and ensure no child misses out.

Your support doesn’t just buy books—it fuels dreams and restores dignity. Thank you so much for the support.

In Hong Kong, refugee and asylum seeker families face significant challenges, including the inability to legally work or live in the city, which places a heavy burden on their daily survival and well-being. Children of these families are particularly vulnerable, as they strive to build a future in an environment of uncertainty and limited resources.

Education is a beacon of hope for these children, yet the cost of textbooks—a fundamental tool for learning—remains a barrier. Grassroots Future is dedicated to removing this obstacle by supporting textbook expenses for refugee and asylum seeker children and has run an annual appeal for the last 5 years.

This year, we raised funds ahead of the annual cycle of textbooks, but despite our best efforts, we are falling short due to the rising cost of textbooks for high school students. Many students and their parents are being forced to pay over HKD5,000 for their textbooks and as their parents do not have legal authorisation to work, they are stuck with a bill they cannot pay. In previous years, HKD1700 was the average cost for textbooks for K-12 - sadly, this is no longer the case.

We are aiming to raise at least HKD30,000 by the end of August to support 30+ families and cover the shortfall for these textbooks books. Donations can be made online (Give.Asia) or to our bank account:

Donations of HKD100 or more are eligible for tax exemption.

By sharing this post, you amplify our call to action and become a part of a compassionate community that stands with refugee and asylum seeker families in Hong Kong. Together, we can light the path to knowledge and empowerment for these children, one textbook at a time. Please, donate generously and share this message to broaden its impact.

✨️ Education Program Update: TE(A)CH at the Grassroots

We are several months into our IT/STEM Education program, so we are due for an update!

We wrapped up our first kid's cohort at the end of last month and we're launching our second kids cohort in a few weeks. Over an 8 week intensive, they were introduced to programming with microbit and developed several motors and lofi robots which they programmed with the tool. We also closed our final teaching weekend with a special tour of a new VR experience at HKU!

We have had 39 people (kids and adults), enrolled across 4 cohorts, in this year's program and we have had the chance to cover programming and robotics with our kids classes and two targeted programs for adults (caregivers) undertaking either the beginner or advanced cohort.

Thanks to for making this program possible, venue partner and education partner (Refugeek), for the VR tour

Today, we wrapped up a 2 day Carbon Literacy training event for NGOs in collaboration with .global Community Pot

Over 8 hours, several locally and internationally based trainers taught units on (1) Nature, Climate and Society; (2) The Power of Personal Change; (3) Farming for the Future and (4) The Environment is Our Business to our group of stakeholders hailing from different local NGOs as well as members of the Grassroots Future community.

Carbon Literacy is the knowledge and capacity required to create a positive shift in how mankind lives, works, and behaves in response to climate change. Learners who have completed a day’s worth of Carbon Literacy learning can be certified as ‘Carbon Literate’ and receive a UK issued qualification.

Thanks to our coorganiser Future Green and Carbon Literacy Community Pot, as well as food sponsors and venue sponsor .space.hk for making our training possible. Our gratitude to our trainers Basel Kirmani, Francesco Scanzani, Heidi Yu Spurrell, Hayley Bagnall and our own Tegan Smyth for delivering the training and preparing materials over many weeks. Special thanks also to Foundation for supporting this activity.
