【 | Series 】The Power of Rebirth in People on the Move
💬 “I am very close to my community. I feel satisfied and happy to help others, because I know what it means to lose contact with your family.”
When conflict broke out in Sudan in 2023, Bashir Mohamed and his roommates were trapped in their student accommodation, without water or food for five days. Fleeing the conflict, he eventually made his way to Ethiopia, only to lose contact with his family for months. When he finally reconnected with them, the news was devastating: several relatives had been killed, while others remained missing.
Despite enduring such profound trauma, Bashir chose to contribute to the community by volunteering at a Red Cross humanitarian service point in Ethiopia. Drawing on his own lived experience, he now helps other displaced people reconnect with their missing family members.
The Sudan conflict has forced at least 14 million people to leave their homes, many of whom were once students or professionals. Through the training and resources provided by the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement to POM, they can equip themselves and turn their experiences into strength—building roots and giving back to their host communities.
With a little more understanding and respect—together, we can help create a more dignified future for people on the move! ❤️
