Hope is Brewing Cafe is officially opening this Saturday! 🎉☕

​Here’s a quick throwback to our soft opening! It was such a great learning experience for our youth, giving them space to practise and fine-tune every detail. They are now working hard on the final preparations!

This one is for our volunteers.

We see you. We see you…

… when you picked up the broom to help clean up, even when no one asked you to.
… when you knelt beside a child to help him engage in the lesson.
… when you sat under a table with a child and protected him from the sharp edges.
… when you persisted, even though a child didn’t engage with you at first.
… when you prepared all the materials needed for a cooking class even though you have a full-time job of your own and dessert isn’t what you usually make!

We appreciate you for all the silent efforts you make behind the scenes, including the ones we don’t even know about.

Thanks for being a vital part of spreading hope in this city! 🏙️❤️

How fun can reading actually be? 📖✨

Wait until you step into our Children’s Fun Reading Time! Every summer, our amazing volunteers create a space where the kids in our community can stay engaged, build confidence, and improve their English through one-on-one time.

From planning every activity to running the sessions, our volunteers pour their heart and time into making sure the children not only read, but also build good character and feel loved!

📚 Imagine children browsing through the book corner, picking a book they like, and finding a cozy corner to read together with their volunteer.

🥰 Imagine knowing that the child who just jumped up and shouted, “I’m the first one to finish the worksheet!”, used to have so much trouble focusing and would only run around the classroom—and seeing how far he has come after all the love and support.

This is our true POV.

So, what actually happened at the Hope is Brewing Cafe soft opening? 🧐😌

We saw youth who…
✨ were initially so shy that they hid behind the curtains, then took a leap of courage to engage with our guests.
✨ memorized all the guests’ names because they learned in hospitality training that being called by name makes guests feel respected.
✨ kept inventing new drinks and improving drink presentation right on the spot.
✨ wore a beaming smile when a guest recognised the latte art he made! 🌿
✨ wrote her own MC script and kept the entire event running at a great pace.
✨ handed drinks to our speakers as soon as they finished sharing (his own idea!)
✨ worked tirelessly behind the scenes making drinks and snacks, and washing up.

We couldn’t be prouder of the effort our youth put in and everything they’ve achieved so far. ❤️

A big shoutout to all the Hope volunteers who came out to support our youth—engaging them in conversations, offering honest feedback, and sharing encouragement like:
☕ "I drink coffee every day, and honestly, this is really good!"
🍰 "I didn’t know you made the cake! I thought you bought it!"

And great appreciation to our speakers, who shared their life stories so genuinely and poured so much encouragement into our youth.

Many of our elderly visit volunteers have been doing home visits for not just months, but years, or even over a decade. But what does that really translate to?

Some elderly started off quite guarded, because they were used to being independent after living on their own for a long time. But slowly, their hearts opened up. Over time, monthly home visits turned into reunions and adventures every month as they explored new spots in the area together. For one group, when the por por had to do a test for dementia, she requested the presence of the volunteers because “I trust them”.

For some other groups, it meant month after month of convincing to get the elderly to muster the courage to get out of the house again after a stroke, or to finally do that pacemaker surgery because the volunteers were there for the follow-up visits, to a point where the family members were surprised they were “just volunteers”.

And it was beautiful to witness how all these relationships flourished and made change possible.

Our Mommies Learn English (MLE) classes just celebrated the graduation of 43 mothers this past May! It was an especially moving moment for our graduating Level 2 class at Hope Centre. Their testimonies truly showed how beautifully our volunteer teachers have journeyed with them.

(Yes, we know this is a bit long for a Reel, but we promise it’s worth watching! 🙌 We’ll work on some shorter ones soon 😝)

Hope of the City is brewing a summer special for you! ✨☕✨

This August, come support our youth interns who are training hard in Sham Shui Po to bring this beloved pop-up cafe back to Hope Centre. Come enjoy coffee, summer drinks, and light snacks prepared by the youth. ☕️

Your presence will support them with a safe space to learn, grow, and shine as they take on different service roles. So bring your friends and spread the word! 🌱

A special shout-out goes to our volunteers who come all the way to the centre to equip the youth in hospitality, social media, and more! 🫶
