Recent economic challenges in Laos have led many young teachers to explore alternate career options. As a result, primary schools across the country are shifting to multi-grade classrooms, in which one teacher teaches multiple grades at a time. To support students and educators through this shift and ensure education endures, our literacy team recently collaborated with local government partners on the development of new multi-grade teacher trainings, covering topics like multi-grade classroom management and lesson planning.

As a learning organization, Room to Read is constantly testing our assumptions and improving our programs. Recently, our Girls’ Education Program team engaged in a deep review of our life skills curriculum to ensure the content meets the needs of students in a rapidly changing world. The result? New life skills classes that help students manage their finances, navigate the impacts of climate change, build inclusive communities, care for their physical and mental health — and more.

At just 14-years-old, Vibeetha struggled to grasp the importance of saving. Growing up in a family where saving wasn't the norm, the concept didn't come naturally. But with the patient guidance of her Room to Read mentor, Vibeetha began to build financial literacy skills. She learned the difference between wants and needs, and how starting even a small savings can provide security — a lesson that became increasingly vital as Sri Lanka entered an economic crisis.

Through Room to Read financial literacy lessons, Vibeetha learned to thoughtfully manage her resources. She started setting aside birthday money, gaining a sense of agency and self-reliance along the way. Read Vibeetha's story: https://bit.ly/3WglX1I

Discriminated against because of her dark skin, Diksha learned her worth and potential through Room to Read life skills classes. She became a bold and compassionate leader for girls in her community, successfully advocating against cultural norms that prevented girls from attending school during menstruation.

When girls like Diksha develop life skills like leadership, collaboration and resilience — skills that empower them to overcome limiting gender norms — they become women who lead and solve problems in novel ways. 📚 ✨
