For many straight people, signing a marriage certificate means rights concerning healthcare, property, inheritance and even end-of-life arrangements are recognised and protected by the marriage system all at once.
These protections come so naturally many never quite realise how much they matter — until they see people around them, who also want to care for their loved ones, unable to gain the same recognition and protection through the same simple means.
Among the 30 interviewees in the HK Family Stories video series, there are four straight couples and one straight father. They have chosen to take part not only to speak up for the LGBTQ+ community, but also to reflect on the marriage system which they are part of, and what it means for family, relationships and protection.
Thank you to those who are protected by the marriage system, yet still choose to support us. Thank you for working together to expand society’s imagination of family.
