The Bug is on Fire

Last Sunday we were able to witness the powerful contemporary interdisciplinary performance of Macao-born artist Albert Garcia . The performance highlighted the life of fireflies and how it resonates on the journey of migrant workers. Fireflies produces fragile intermittent light, they flicker as they grow and suddenly vanish. Their light shows people their beautiful existence. The average life span of an adult firefly is about 14 days. Their fading glow reflects on the same number of days as the 14 day rule for migrant domestic workers. Within these 14 days, they need to find a new place to stay, otherwise, vanish.

The project is a combination of theater, arts and personal narrative by the artist clearly stating the significance of finding home even in the midst of environmental and forced labor migrations. The show is a poetic invitation to listen and see the hidden survival not just of fireflies but also of migrant workers.

Migrant Writers of Hong Kong is so grateful to be invited to the celebration of our 128th Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Philippine Independence.
We are part of the table with our honourable Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong R Victor Israel and had breakfast together with his betterhalf ginang Catherine Joy Israel which her father side is from my hometown and raised in .

Happy 128th Independence Day, Philippines! 🇵🇭✨ Today marks a proud milestone in our nation’s history, one that honors the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering determination of the Filipinos who fought to secure our freedom. Independence Day is not only a date on the calendar; it is a living reminder of the values that shaped our identity: bravery, resilience, and the belief that liberty is worth working for.

As we celebrate, let us remember that independence is not a one-time achievement. It is an ongoing responsibility. Our freedom calls us to be active citizens, people who care about their communities, uphold truth, and stand for justice. In every generation, the meaning of patriotism evolves, but its purpose remains the same: to serve the nation with sincerity and to keep hope alive even during difficult times.

This day invites us to reflect on our progress and also to acknowledge what still needs improvement. Together, we can strengthen education, promote fairness, protect the environment, and support opportunities for every Filipino, especially those who face hardship.

May our Independence Day celebration fill our hearts with pride and inspiration. May we honor our heritage, celebrate our culture, and work side by side toward a brighter future. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas, and may our collective strength guide us toward lasting peace, development, and unity. 🇵🇭✨

Congratulations to one of our brilliant writers in the community, Leda Rose for another successful movie. The screening of Torn Between the Two was held last May 3 at the Philippine Consulate. Torn Between the Two, is a romanctic story that evolves on trust, loyalty and willing to change oneself for your loved one. It is the sequel of I Love You Tsuper which was also filmed and shown last year. The movie was directed by Krishna Carla .soila, a domestic helper and a film maker since 2017. It was produced by ELL Film Production and supported by various donors.

The film showcases the talents and skills of Filipino domestic workers community in writing, acting and filming. A truly work of art and heart that was meticulously done despite of their struggles between their passion and regular jobs.

Kudos to all the cast!

This event created to showcase and exhibit Women's Journal Art Project in Partnership with PathFinders for Migrant Workers which is funded by HER Fund 婦女動力基金 supporting by our venue partner 舍區 Quarryside and Souvenir by Boloku.Clothing

A culminating public exhibition will showcase MDWs artworks and stories, challenging viewers to confront biases and foster empathy. This visibility seeks to deconstruct systemic invisibility and advocate for social justice by highlighting the often overlooked contributions and struggles of Migrants Community.

Designed to empower the rising voice of migrant workers in Hong Kong through Art by providing a creative platform to challenge patriarchal and societal oppression. Recognizing that Migrants Workers are often silenced and marginalized within both their communities and society at large, the initiative seeks to reclaim their agency, narratives, and artistic expressions as acts of resistance and self-affirmation.

The project comprises eight workshops designed to foster artistic skills and create safe spaces for MDWs to articulate their personal stories and experiences who has finished the training during Jan-May 2026. Led by professional artists and facilitators, these sessions encourage participants to explore diverse mediums, confront stereotypes, and celebrate their identities beyond societal labels. The process affirms their worth and promotes solidarity, emphasizing that their voices matter.

Ultimately, this initiative aims to foster gender equality, affirm their rights, and elevate their stories as vital threads in Hong Kong’s diverse social fabric . This project not only aims to transform individual lives through art but also aspires to initiate broader societal change by bringing these crucial issues to the forefront.

Happy Mother’s Day! We’re celebrating the incredible moms in our community with something truly special for our members. Your support means the world, and we’re grateful to have you with us. Thank you for everything you do - today we honor love, strength, and cherished moments.

Challenges are indeed difficult to conquer, but we are brave enough to face each one. We, the Migrant Writers of Hong Kong, want to thank every participant of our Bead It Together: Connecting Wonderful Stories One at a Time workshop for joining us in a meaningful challenge - sharing the stories that inspire them to keep beading until they finish the coin purse we asked them to create.

This workshop was more than a creative activity. It was an invitation to turn patience into progress, to transform small moments of effort into something tangible, and to connect through shared experiences. For many, the beading challenge became a reminder that perseverance is possible even when life feels demanding. Every bead placed was a step forward - one that carried a personal message, a memory, or a hope for what comes next.

And yes - participants accepted the challenge with courage and dedication. We are truly proud to announce the three lucky winners who completed their coin purses and embraced the spirit of the workshop with heart and determination. Their stories and craftsmanship reflect resilience, creativity, and the willingness to continue despite difficulties.

We look forward to more wonderful stories - and to more people joining us in the future, whether through reading, listening, or learning to create something beautiful with their own hands.

Thank you to our GiGi Crafts for your dedication and patience in guiding our participants. Salute to your knowledge.

Congratulations everyone and Happy Mother's Day!
