Sound Scoop @ Zoo Records
Zoo Records

Bird calls have been here all along. In the same city, the same neighborhood, the same stretch of sky, we share the same afternoons, the same benches, the same pools of shade. However, we once heard birdsong from coming from an artificial birdsong device in a park. If our city is already filled with birdsongs, why is there a need for such artificial sounds? As we walk through the streets and alleys, we are used to hearing mostly human sounds, but have we ever paused to listen for the voices of these small neighbours? Have we ever been curious about their conversations? Would we notice if there were artificial birdsong devices?

We invite you to put on a pair of headphones and lean into a few recordings. Can you tell which is the real birdsong? After listening to the tracks, carry this curiosity with you, follow the “Walking Map,” lift your gaze toward the rooftops, into the shade of the trees, along the edges of windowsills, and look at our tiny neighbours from a new perspective.

DIALOGUE with artists Alice Cheng Chau-yung and Cheri Tang Tsz-wai

Alice Cheng Chau-yung and Cheri Tang Tsz-wai are two emerging artists supported by soundpocket’s Artist Support Programme 2025–26. As part of this programme, Cheri and Alice completed residencies in Tokyo and Chicago in May and July 2026 respectively. In this upcoming DIALOGUE, Alice will tell us about her continuing research into the sonic ecology of urban landscapes, and her experience of drifting through various Chicago neighbourhoods collecting communal voices and field recordings, and how these materials inspired her research log “Drifting Through the Resonance”. Meanwhile, Cheri will share with us her fascination with the acoustic potential of clay bodies and how she has extended her ongoing project 𝘱𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘴 from Hong Kong to Japan. Her experiences of this journey culminated in her solo exhibition “[pocketed grounds] ↔ ([[o]]) Bells” in Tokyo.

Artist Support Programme 2026-27 | Call for Application

We began offering direct support to artists and their projects in 2010. By direct support, we mean a cash stipend that is distributed to the artist as on a monthly basis. This programme has supported 29 artists so far.

With two principles in mind: enriching the artists’ experience in a different cultural context, and offering a more stretched-out time frame for the personal development of the artists, we invite interested and eligible artists to submit an application for the programme this year. Short-listed applicants will be invited to attend an interview to be held during 7 - 11 September, 2026. 2 artists are to be selected.

Application Closes: 11pm, 30 August 2026
Interviews: 7 - 11 September 2026
Result Announcement: mid-September 2026

Drifting Through the Resonance – An Online Artist Sharing and Research Log by Alice Cheng Chau-yung

With the support of soundpocket and Experimental Sound Studio, Alice Cheng Chau-yung is now in Chicago for a one-month artist residency. Serving as an initial grounding for her broader research into the sonic ecology of urban landscapes, Drifting Through the Resonance takes shape as an audio archive and a written research log documenting the city’s acoustic environments. Alice’s research has been guided by an intentional, yet unmapped drifting through various Chicago neighbourhoods. This process became an exercise in navigating urban textures and finding her attention at times pulled toward the accidental details of the periphery rather than her intended destinations.

The resulting archive has grown by sourcing communal voices and field recordings, becoming a journey of comprehension, a slow reading of the city. By embracing what each excursion offered, the captured fragments are reframed not as planned documentation, but as quiet, unexpected convergences.

In this online sharing, Alice will open her log and archive, sharing the fragments, the quiet walks, and the observations gathered during her drift.

Alice Cheng Chau-yung is supported by soundpocket’s Artist Support Programme 2025–26.

Research Interview: artist working with sound in Hong Kong – Andio Lai Chung-man

Creative practice is often about more than the artwork itself; its concepts and mediums are often intertwined with the artist’s personal experiences – whether as a conscious response or as an unconscious accompaniment. In the practice of Andio Lai Chung-man, traces of his past can always be found. In the new research interview, Andio takes us through his past and present, offering a glimpse of who he is beyond the identity of “artist,” and revealing how these experiences have shaped him as an artist. Through this journey, the connections and underlying narrative emerge naturally.

Feature Story “Invention as Invitation: Playing, Listening, and the Unfinished Instrument in the Universe of Chaklam Ng”

As we grow, we discover sound and “learn” sound—we follow the sonic symbolic order constituted by society unconsciously, losing our “acoustic consciousness” gradually. Dr. Ahkok Wong Chun Kwok discusses how artist Chaklam Ng’s instrument inventions undo the filtering habits of adults, invite audience to rediscover everyday sounds, and enter the open-ended play and listening. Perhaps discovering new and interesting things needn't be such hard work. By reawakening your “acoustic consciousness”, you will realise you have been surrounded by novelty and fascination all along.

With the support of soundpocket and Art Center Ongoing, Japanese artist Minao Iguchi is currently undertaking a one-month residency in Hong Kong. Minao’s works explore how the human body and mind are shaped by social norms. Minao’s previous works focused on topics such as fashion, diet, rituals, and conspiracy theories through the mediums of performance, video, and sculpture.

In Minao’s solo exhibition “Topological Cities,” starting from the theory of Topology which focuses on how things are connected and related, she will showcase performance videos and installations which explore the uncertainty of the boundary between body and city. For the “Knead to build” Workshop, Minao will explore together with the participants how we view the relationship between our bodies and the city, through building structures with protein powder. In the DIALOGUE, Minao will share her previous artworks and explain how bodily and social norms inform her artistic practice, and how they appear in her performances.

[pocketed grounds] ↔ ([[o]]) Bells – Cheri Tang Tsz-wai Solo Exhibition

With the support of soundpocket and Art Center Ongoing, Cheri Tang Tsz-wai is currently undertaking a one-month artist residency in Tokyo. Rooted in a fascination with the acoustic potential of clay bodies, Cheri’s practice invites the audience to join her in uncovering the unique sonic personalities embedded in everyday matter.

In Hong Kong Cheri works with ceramics and often reflects on her reliance on commercial clay, feeling disconnected from the local earth. During this journey to Tokyo, she has extended her ongoing project 𝘱𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘴 from Hong Kong to the geological and urban landscapes of Japan. Her process is one of direct, quiet engagement: from construction sites, the city’s soil memory; from historic ceramic centers, locally mined clays. This is soil with memory – earth that remembers where it has been, what has passed over it, and what has been buried beneath it.

This exhibition is an expression of a material dialogue between the artist and the land. By blending these clays with industrial elements and field recordings from visited locations, Cheri has created a series of ceramic sound bodies – resonant vessels that give voice to the spirit of their origin. They are ([[o]]): an opening, a mouth, an ear, a threshold, a hollow that knows the shape of giving.

Cheri Tang Tsz-wai is supported by soundpocket’s Artist Support Programme 2025–26.
