勃勃海洋 Living Seas Hong Kong

勃勃海洋 Living Seas Hong Kong Living Seas Hong Kong is a group of Hong Kong residents who are concerned about the lack of real progress to protect our marine resources. Everyone can help.

Watch this page or go to our website. http://www.livingseas.hk Living Seas Hong Kong works hard to raise awareness of marine life in Hong Kong and the challenges they face. We run regular hiking and snorkeling events and conduct presentations to Hong Kong people. Mixing awareness with fun. We have also worked hard with key marine life stakeholders such as government officials. We believe that partnership is the way forward.

Quick fun video of our BioBlitz day at Basalt Island (火石洲) on 26th April. A fun day out and productive.

Basalt Island of course is a super biodiverse dive site, and we were happy to include some of the species found into this year's City Nature Challenge on iNaturalist.

Sharp Island (橋咀洲) is a special place, well known for it's coral coverage, it also has amazing biodiversity and variety of species.

Sharp Island is very easily visited, as it is very close to Sai Kung town, but we are very happy to see the recent measures put in place by WWF Hong Kong and 漁農自然護理署 Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department to manage numbers and behaviours when visiting this site.

Here's a few photos from recent dives in the last 1-2 months.
Definitely worth protecting and enhancing this fabulous place.

We came across a very large ghost net Island. Ghost nets are discarded or lost fishing nets, that continue to be killers.

We were distressed to find two floral wrasse (Cheilinus chlorourus) caught. One managed to escape and swim off. A second one was completely snared.

We did our best to cut away the net, and this fish swam off. But we fear it will not survive, injuries to it's neck looked bad.

We hope that more can be done to stop nets being discarded and left behind, killing innocent marine life.

Had a super positive and productive day with the seagrass team from HKU-SWIMS, learning about and helping with some seagrass restoration on Lamma.

The blotched fantail ray is a large stingray inhabiting tropical waters and sandy floors, and feeds on crustaceans and mollusks. It’s under threat from climate change through habitat loss and intensified marine heatwaves that disrupt its range and prey availability.

Sargassum is an important habitat in Hong Kong waters, supporting loads of juvenile fish in spring time, we went out recently to have a look see.

We are working with researchers at HKU, so If you see any patches of sargassum whilst out on the water, please let us know, we need location and some photos.

Sylvia Earle is an American marine biologist, explorer, and author often called “Her Deepness” for her pioneering work in ocean exploration. She has led more than 100 expeditions, set records for deep-sea dives, and served as the first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She is also the founder of Mission Blue, a global initiative that campaigns to protect ecologically critical areas that are vital to the health of our blue planet. In her book The World Is Blue, she powerfully explains how closely our lives are intertwined with the ocean and why protecting it is essential for Earth’s future.
