*You are being evaluated more often than you think.*

At this week’s Villain Monologue themed meeting, our General Evaluator, Andrew Yeung, played the villain perfectly.

In every story, villians have a purpose — they reveal weaknesses and force heroes to grow. And Andrew did exactly that- make us see things we hadn’t noticed ourselves.

One observation stood out:
Showing up is not the same as being prepared.

In Toastmasters, a General Evaluator helps us reflect on how we perform our roles and how the meeting is run.

At work, we rarely have someone giving us that kind of feedback.
But we are still being evaluated.

Every meeting.�Every presentation.�Every project update.

People notice when we are prepared. And when we are not.

That’s one of the benefits of Toastmasters. It builds the habits of preparation, self-awareness, and professionalism before the stakes are high.

Because in the real world, there may not be a General Evaluator.
But there is always an audience.

Defend a useless superpower.

That was last night's Table Topics challenge at Hong Kong Achievers Toastmasters.

Sounds simple? No, It wasn't.

How do you convince an audience that an obviously useless ability is actually valuable?

If you think about it, the challenge wasn't about finding the right answer.
It was about finding your voice under pressure.

Because in real life, we are often asked to do the same thing.
- Explain a strategy that didn't work.
- ⁠Defend a decision that others question.
- ⁠Find value in an idea that others already dismissed.

The people who stand out aren't always the ones who were right.

They are the ones who can stay calm, think clearly, and communicate confidently when the answer isn't obvious.

And that is a superpower.

But it’s not something that we are born with, it’s something we build week by week, speech by speech. That's what makes Table Topics so valuable. It's not just public speaking practice.
It's practice for real life.

No guarantee they would get it right.

They just stepped up.

Last night, our Hong Kong Achievers Toastmasters Club hosted a full house with audience and guests, including attendees from different countries—reflecting the diversity and inclusion of our club.

⏱️ Natalie Chong took responsibility for keeping the meeting on track.
📝 Saurabh Mandal listened closely and tracked filler words throughout the meeting.
🎤 Victor So led our impromptu speaking session.

With Action as our theme, this meeting reinforced an important leadership lesson:
Most opportunities don’t come after confidence. They come before it.

Action comes first. Confidence follows.
