The Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects (HKILA) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Hong Kong have established a mutual agreement in promoting local biodiversity and nature conservation in Hong Kong and nearby regions, forging the advocacy of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to create a biodiverse and resilient city for future generations. The collaboration of leadership and enhancing community engagement aim to accelerate the implementation and scaling up of NbS in Hong Kong and the Asia Pacific Region as well as promoting sustainability and ecological health.

The ceremony signifies the importance of ecological civilization initiatives and promotion of environment conservation. In this event, apart from witnessing the important moment of MoU signing ceremony between HKILA and TNC, participants will learn more about TNC’s ecological restoration works in Ha Pak Nai, oyster aquaculture techniques and AFCD’s Fish enjoy Scheme.

🌍 HKILA at the UIA World Congress of Architects 2026!

We joined HKIA as delegates in Barcelona for an inspiring week of professional exchange at the UIA World Congress. From the opening ceremony at Les Tres Xemeneies to insightful dialogues with IAAC and PichArchitects, it was a remarkable journey of outreach and collaboration. We also participated in the HKIA Exhibition Opening, the Gala Dinner, and HKIA’s dedicated Parallel Sessions, which provided parallel perspectives on high-density urban environments.

Under the compelling theme “Becoming. Architectures for a Planet in Transition,” the congress highlighted a profound shift in the design world. The congress was structured around six themes, each exploring a distinct “becoming.” Not coincidentally, the discourse emphasized ecosystems, resilience, and a shift beyond anthropocentric design toward multispecies frameworks—principles deeply rooted in the fundamentals of landscape architecture.

In the opening plenary, Dirk Sijmons, Bas Smets, and participating architects fostered a cross-disciplinary dialogue centered on ecological perspectives, climatic diversity, and “regrowth rather than repair.” The focus shifted to living systems—lichen, algae, mycelium, and wider ecosystems—instead of static objects. This theme continued across sessions, with familiar names like Turenscape, Charles Waldheim, and Kate Orff addressing rivers, soil, and evolving ecologies.

In this post-extractivist era, the discipline is shifting from a monoculture of artificiality to a functional aesthetic that embraces multiplicity across both urban and rural contexts. The intersection of landscape and architecture is closer than ever, and we look forward to closer collaboration with architects for a planet in transition.   🤝🍃

To support the preparation for the Professional Practice Examination (PPE), the HKILA Education Committee is pleased to host a series of lectures covering the five sections of the PPE syllabus.

We are delighted to announce that Lecture 3 will take place on 12 August 2026 (WED). This session features Mr. John CHARTERS and Ms. Siuman HUNG, who will provide expert briefings on Professional Responsibilities, Liabilities, and Ethics under Section 1 and Professional Practice Management under Section 3. We also invited some newly registered professional members to attend the session, providing an excellent opportunity to foster connections, share recent exam insights, and engage in peer discussions.
