Have you seen, or are you familiar with these fishes? Ever found them confusing to tell apart? 🫪

Yes, they all have a pair of big fins that look like wings, viewing them side-by-side, their difference in body colour and pattern are readily distinguishable. However, the real challenge comes when we dive, as in the field we often only see one species at a time… but mixing them up could cost you a mega miss!

Don’t be fooled again! The differences in their body structures are another way to tell them apart. Among them, the Ocellated waspfish (pic. 1) is the only one with chin barbels. The Fingered dragonet (pic. 2) has one pair of rods for poking around, while the Bluefin gurnard (pic. 3) has three pairs. Last but not least, the big fins on the Oriental flying gurnard (pic. 4) measures almost the entire length of its body!

📖 The introduction in our new book covers some other clues that could be useful for a more systemic way to identify fishes, go check it out!

If you’ve dived in Hong Kong, you’ll for sure have met our ferocious Yellowtail clownfish (𝘈𝘮𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘪). But did you know that the largest (and often angriest) fish in the family is always their breeding female? In other words, Mom! Show your fearless, protective, and sometimes scary mother some love today!

📖 Read more about this and other reef fish stories in our book, “Fantastic Fishes and Where to Find Them—Field Guide of the 114°E Hong Kong Reef Fish Survey”!

🤿🤿🤿 Ever come back from a dive and wondered “What’s This Fish🤔?!” Indeed, there are waaay more species to appreciate and discover than what we can 💭memorise 🧠. That’s why we’ve included the “Species Catalogue” in our Field Guide, dedicated to showcasing all illustrations of the 422 species with 📖corresponding pages📖 marked for every family and species. This is the go-to section to flip-through when looking up a fish in the book👀.

Besides their appearance, other clues helping identification are also noted for each species, such as the preferred habitats 🪸, and whether it is a “lone wolf” or a “social animal”. Match up your underwater observations and photographs using these tools, and getting to know our fantastic reef fishes should be no challenge at all 🐡🐠🐟!

P.S. Check out the “How To Use This Book” section to unlock more information through the different icons! 🥳
