Japan will soon be rolling out its first-ever nationwide LGBTQ+ education programs. The programs will be launched across workplaces, schools and universities, as well as in homes.
Reports from Japanese media say that the move is designed to promote broader public understanding and awareness of diversity across the country. It follows on from the Act of the Promotion of Public Understanding of the Diversity of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, which passed in 2023 and meant that an education plan was required.
While the final plan hasn’t been made public yet, reports state that the draft program says that LGBTQ+ people can "experience confusion, anxiety and difficulties in daily life due to insufficient public understanding."
As well as the education program itself, yearly reports on its progress, overall public understanding of issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community and related policies will also be introduced. The scheme will then be reviewed every three years.
This is a positive step for Japan, which still has not legalised same-sex marriage.
