Microwave International New Media Arts Festival

Microwave International New Media Arts Festival

Microwave began in 1996 and has evolved to become the first and only art festival in Hong Kong dedicated to new media art. Microwave has steadily grown into a well-established festival that brings cutting-edge works to provoke thought in the technological hub every year. Apart from the grand annual festival, Microwave also endeavours to nurture a rising local new media arts community, organising v

arious programmes such as competitions, educational workshops, seminars, forums, exhibitions, and producing quality projects. Microwave will continue our hard work to inspire Hong Kong and the rest of the world with the cutting-edge media artworks we gather, while also avidly supporting the exchange and dialogue between artists, professionals, and the general public.

《In the Time of Hope 裂縫》企劃最終站: 《Artists with Tools 實驗修羅》

“In the Time of Hope: Artists with Tools” will be held on 18 -26 Apr at Hong Kong Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre.
Artists with Tools: Experimental Asura is not conceived as an exhibition in the conventional sense, but as a testing ground — a process in continuous transformation. It brings together artists and creators who use their chosen media as instruments: to reveal, to test, to transmute, and to open spaces where emotion and dialogue may dwell. Here, tools are not merely technical devices. They are extensions of feeling, methods of inquiry, gestures of care. Artists with Tools gathers these evolving stages together, presented as the final chapter of In the Time of Hope. Since 2024, Microwave has been exploring how the convergence of art and technology might open new ways of caring for emotional well-being. So now, we do not merely walk alongside one another, we indeed learn from light — to pass through fissures, to move across walls, and to keep, within the fracture.
Let’s hope for hope itself.

Microwave presents - In the Time of Hope

The project brings together multiple cross-disciplinary collaborations. Media artist Miu Ling Lam employs optics to reveal contexts that have been obscured or erased, and animation director and illustrator Florence Lee responds to emotional currents in short stories (developed from research with HKFYG) through hand-drawn works and tech specialist Jason Lam transforms collected emotional tracking data into screen-based works, allowing physiological fluctuations to shape visual rhythm. Last but not least, Hong Kong film art director and creator Silver Cheung produced a short film using artificial intelligence, exploring imagination and projection within technological environments towards the shared topic & concern.
These works did not emerge in isolation. Curator Joel Kwong — also known as writer Fei-fei Kwong — drew upon research conducted in collaboration with the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) and wrote three short stories for the participating artists & creators. Addressing diaspora, deception, and the battleground of contemporary work life, these narratives explore emotional states and lived experiences, offering each artist an entry point — a shared emotional ground from which to begin. Each work appears across different platforms, engaging diverse audiences. The online platform includes podcasts and artist conversations, expanding ways of understanding the works and exploring how art and technology might express — and perhaps tend to — shared trauma and its aftermath.

Microwave presents - In the Time of Hope

《In the Time of HOPE》
In the Time of HOPE is not a declaration of naive optimism. If you have ever walked through a tunnel without visible end, you know that the only companion you truly have is yourself. What sustains you for a few more steps is not certainty, but a stubborn belief — that perhaps, just a little further on, there will be light. The Chinese subtitle – the Crack (裂縫) responds to this belief:
Where there is even the slightest opening, light can seep through.

LAST CALL |

”Walk Through Walls“ was never just about breaking through. It was always about learning to live with what surrounds us.

Together we’ve connected art and technology, built empathy, and asked the difficult question: who truly walks with us through the invisible walls?

Joel offers no simple answers—only an invitation:
Let‘s continue the journey, together.

Curator’s Highlight | Pickles: to Ferment our Lives

More than a tool—it’s an intimate journey inward.
In a world that moves too fast, ”Pickles“ invites us to slow down and turn fleeting thoughts & raw emotions into wisdom, much like the timeless art of fermentation.

Curator’s Highlight | Grandma

A playable memory in pixel art form. Step into ”Grandma“ by Zhou Yichen - share meals, take walks, and sit together in this retro-style game about family, presence, and the quiet ache of loss. When Grandma departs, her love remains in every object and scene. Not just a game, but an emotional landscape.

Project Room P: History Will Repeat Itself

From ”Project Room A“ to today‘s ”P,“ this has been the experimental core of Microwave. It’s not about final pieces, but the creative process itself.
This year‘s theme: History Will Repeat Itself.

In collaboration with , we transform youth emotions into textual stories. These narratives are reimagined by film designer Silver Cheung into visual works, and by animation artist Florence Lee into hand-drawn creations.

We’ve recorded the creators‘ biometric data as a starting point for this year-long experiment. We are different, yet we are truly the same.
