🌉 Joint Society Site Visit: GBA Shiziyang Passageway Bridge Channel
IMechE Hong Kong Branch, together with HKIHT, ICE HKA G&S, and HKIE YMC, recently organised a joint society site visit on 22 Aug 2026 to the Shiziyang Channel — one of the most significant transportation infrastructure projects currently under development in the Greater Bay Area.
The programme began with a technical presentation on the Shiziyang Channel, a landmark double-deck steel truss suspension bridge expected to achieve multiple world-class engineering milestones upon completion. Participants gained insight into the project's planning, design, construction methodology, and strategic significance to regional connectivity.
At the exhibition, small-scale 3D-printed models brought the bridge's structural system to life — from the saddle and prefabricated tower segments to the truss girder segments — showing how these components are precisely connected to enable efficient on-site installation.
The visit concluded on site, where members observed the construction of the massive main tower and saddle firsthand. Given the complexity of the works, participants saw how civil, mechanical, and sensor engineering interact to bring the structure to life: precision techniques for installing cable saddles and main cables; and intelligent monitoring systems — including load and wind-speed monitoring, bolt tightness sensors, structural alignment control, and IoT sensors — working together to ensure safety and precision in a coastal, high-wind environment.
Beyond the technical exposure, the tour offered a valuable platform for cross-region exchange, strengthening collaboration among engineers from Guangdong and Hong Kong and broadening their perspective on advanced bridge engineering and modern infrastructure delivery.
