▍Path of Liberation Level 5: Recognising the Nature of Mind through Visualisation
Our minds are constantly filled with thoughts. The sixth consciousness—the thinking, conceptual mind—is especially active.
Yet this is not an obstacle to practice. It is precisely where practice begins.
The White Tara practice in Tergar’s Path of Liberation Level 5 does not ask us to first stop all thoughts before recognising the nature of mind. Instead, we skilfully engage the mind that habitually conceptualises and imagines: visualising the form of the deity and the seed syllable, and reciting the deity’s mantra.
Through repeated visualisation and recitation, we gradually come to understand that discursive thoughts themselves are also expressions of the nature of mind.
Visualisation involves the conceptual mind, yet what it ultimately points to is the awareness that cannot be captured by concepts—the true nature of mind.
This is the skilful means of development-stage practice: we do not reject discursive thought, but make use of it to return to the source of awareness.
The White Tara practice of Path of Liberation Level 5 offers just such a path:
Through form, we are led beyond form.
Through thought, we recognise the source of thought.
In this retreat, Mingyur Rinpoche will teach Radiance of the Heart, the White Tara practice liturgy he composed.
