EmpowerU is a nonprofit organisation based in Hong Kong that empowers migrant domestic workers and ethnically diverse youth through community-based education. Our mission is to provide high-quality education to those on the margins, so they can use their voice to create a better future. We offer both online and in-person classes at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) campus and in local secondary schools. By combining technology, community, and award-winning educators, we have created a unique impact-based program that empowers marginalized youth and migrant workers and creates a generation of leaders who will ignite sustainable social impact.

The Intro to Law class was led by David Bishop, EmpowerU’s co-founder and an Associate Professor of Teaching at The University of Hong Kong.

To break the ice, students engaged in a roleplay exercise involving the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In the exercise, there has been an alien invasion, so students split into groups and collectively decided on fifteen human rights to keep. In later rounds, the number of rights they could retain dwindled to three, inciting a lot of back-and-forth discussion 💬

Thank you David for leading a law class that was informative, thought-provoking and intellectually stimulating 🌟 The class helped everyone learn more about our judicial system and encouraged fun debates 🗣

The term kicked off with a leadership class focused on personal development 🌟 It was led by David Bishop, EmpowerU’s co-founder and an Associate Professor of Teaching at The University of Hong Kong.

The class began with an exploration of concepts of social fitness and its keystones of support, such as identity affirmation and shared experience. It also delved into leadership development through a framework called the leadership MAP (Mastery, Autonomy and Purpose) 🗺

By doing a deep dive into their core values and motivations, EmpowerU students learned where their individual priorities lie, and could map out their hopes for both the term and their long-term goals.

Thank you David for leading a class that encouraged everyone to reflect so they can all start their own impact journeys 💫

POV: Our Programme Director, Sumi takes the stage at The Zubin Youth Summit 2026 and our Programme Coordinator, Divi is right there in the crowd cheering her on 🥹✨

A little day in the life peek at the summit—from a powerful discussion on identity, the "in-betweener" experience, to building meaningful connections with students and speakers (plus a lil' snack break)!

Discussions like this reminds us of why we built spaces like our PowerThru Education Programme for our ethnically diverse community.

Last Sunday, EmpowerU welcomed all new and returning students on Orientation Day! 🥳

Everyone on the EmpowerU team introduced themselves, including Payal, our new Executive Director! All EmpowerU students set up their online learning accounts, bonded over various games to break the ice, and participated in a fun giveaway.

Student volunteers who have helped throughout the years were also given a special shoutout and handed certificates in celebration of their work and dedication here at EmpowerU.

To conclude the day, all the students recited a class pledge to ensure that the EmpowerU classroom is a safe learning space for everyone.

We look forward to a wonderful term with everyone at EmpowerU! 💓

EmpowerU hosted two Open Days at The University of Hong Kong, where prospective students could enroll or ask questions about EmpowerU’s educational program tailored for domestic workers.

Prospective students had the chance to speak to the EmpowerU team and student alumni one-on-one, and got a glimpse of the classroom where their lessons are held ✏️

We would like to thank gentle books, a mobile secondhand bookshop with a selection of fiction and nonfiction, for their generous donation of over 100 books 📖 Thanks to you, everyone who came by on Open Day received a free book! 🌟
