The Society aims to contribute to the knowledge of China and East Asia, with social reference to Hong Kong, through its talks, local and overseas tours to places of cultural and historical interest, and its journal. Its parent body, the Royal Asiatic Society, was founded in London in 1823 ‘for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the art
s, in relation of Asia’. Branches were subsequently formed in India and Ceylon. Originally founded in 1847, the Hong Kong Branch ceased to exist at the end of 1859. Exactly a century later, on 28 December 1959, it was resuscitated with the approval of the parent society in London.
