Tomorrow is International Children's Day (1 June)

At AFHK we celebrate all children…especially the ones whose paths to family looked a little different. The families in this community have navigated paperwork, waiting, uncertainty, and the lifelong and beautiful work of raising children who carry more than one story.

We’re thinking about every child still waiting, every family still in the process, and every adoptee growing into who they are. You're why this community exists. 🧡

At some point, most adoptees start asking questions their parents can’t fully answer.
Where did I come from? What happened before I was adopted? Who do I look like?

Those questions are one of the most natural parts of growing up adopted, and they deserve more than a shrug. Roots tracing in Asia is genuinely complicated though. Records are incomplete, agencies have closed, and births that happened decades ago were often never formally documented. For many families, the search is winding - spanning years and crossing multiple countries.

AFHK has developed a guide to help adoptees and families understand what the journey actually looks like and how to walk into it with the right support around you.

If your adopted child is school age and their teacher hasn’t flagged anything, that doesn’t always mean everything is fine.

Last week speech therapist and adoptive parent, Annie Ng, walked our community through how speech and language gaps present differently at different ages, and a lot of what she shared isn’t covered in standard parenting resources or school assessments.

She also discussed how play is one of the most effective tools parents have for supporting speech and language development at home, between sessions, in everyday moments.

Parents in our community left with a clearer picture of what to look for, when to push for support, and how to use everyday play to help in the meantime.

▶️If you missed this one, keep an eye on our feed, emails and WA group for our next event. And if you know an adoptive parent who’d benefit from this community, send this their way!

You’re doing everything right, yet still wondering if it’s enough for your child.

Tomorrow, adoptive parents can join us in learning from Annie Ng. Annie is a HK trauma-informed pediatric speech-language therapist and an adoptive mother herself. Her workshop will teach us about language development, play, and connection, built specifically for adoptive and waiting families.

She’ll walk us through what’s actually happening in our children’s development, when to act vs. wait, and simple everyday moments we can use right now at home.

As Mother’s Day comes to a close, we’re thinking of and celebrating the many forms of motherhood that shape our community — adoptive mothers, birth mothers, foster mothers, waiting mothers, grandmothers, mother figures, and all those who love and care so deeply. 🌸

Thank you for the strength, compassion, and connection you bring to every stage of the adoption journey. Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at AFHK. 🧡

Leadership looks like this. Members of our Steering Committee gathered last week to continue planning supportive events and resources for our growing AFHK community.

And this meeting, an AFHK adoptive parent and an adult adoptee joined us at the table, bringing the kind of perspective and insight that makes everything more meaningful. That’s the AFHK way. The people this mission is for help shape where it goes. 🧡

Your child’s early medical story matters — and in Hong Kong, you can access it.
For many adoptive parents, one of the biggest questions is how to fill in the early chapters of their child’s life. Medical records can offer clarity, reassurance, and important information for both health and identity as your child grows.
If your child was born in or received care at a Hong Kong Hospital Authority (HA) hospital, you can request their medical records through a Data Access Request (DAR). This process can feel overwhelming at first, but you don’t have to navigate it alone.
In our latest article, we walk you through:
✨ What the DAR form is and where to get it
✨ What details to include so your request is complete
✨ What documents you’ll need as your child’s legal parent
✨ Fees, timelines, and what to expect

Whether you’re gathering information for today’s healthcare needs or preparing for the questions your child may ask in the future, accessing these records is a meaningful step in supporting their story.

Every roots‑tracing journey begins with a single step, and sometimes, with the courage to ask for support.

Last fall, AFHK’s roots‑tracing advocate, Vivian, met with Jennifer and her daughter Marisa, an adult adoptee who reached out with a heartfelt wish: to understand her beginnings and, if possible, reconnect with her birth mother in Hong Kong.

Adopted as a baby and now a doctor serving her community in Australia, Marisa is navigating this deeply personal process with openness, strength, and the support of her family, friends, professionals, and the AFHK community.

Her journey is still unfolding. There are no guarantees, only possibilities. But Marisa reminds us that searching for our roots is not just about answers; it’s honoring every part of who we are and the ones who also took the determination and courage to give us our lives.

We’re grateful to walk alongside adoptees like Marisa as they explore their past, their identity, and their stories. 🌱💛
