Asia’s New Media Art Collective since 1986 To promote a free and open DIY culture, Videotage begins to host Dorkbot-HK in 2010.

With the continuous support from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Videotage organizes exhibitions, workshops, performances, artist-in-residencies and exchange programs to bring media art closer to our everyday life. Curatorial projects not only takes place at Videotage’s office at the Cattle Depot Artist Village, or formerly at the Oil Street Artist Village, but expands to different spheres in the public – at shopping mall, at school, and in collaboration with museum and art centre locally and worldwide. VMAC (Videotage Media Art Collection) was officiated in 2008 with mission to collect, preserve and build an extensive archive of video and media art of Hong Kong. Representing more than 20 years of development in media art, VMAC, that is opened to general public in 2011, together with the eight volumes of The Best of Videotage, a publication series that captures over 100 artists’ work in print, are of high significant educational value to the discourse of media archeology and art history in Hong Kong. Videotage, a listed media art organisation in UNESCO, has been long-term collaborator with other media art organizations to for the betterment of video art and new media art locally and worldwide. Videotage has been the strategic partner of Microwave International New Media Arts Festival, that celebrates its 15th Anniversary in 2011. Videotage is also invited to participate in the Venice Biennale of Architecture, Gwangju Biennial, Guangzhou Triennial, ISEA Festival and etc. International exposure also appears in form of exchange programs with the British Arts Festival, the Goethe-Institut, also participated in Remake HK, Project Unlimited organised by the Guggenheim Museum and YouTube in 2010. Videotage conceives new media art as a cultural movement that brings art and technology productions to nodes of intersections in the digital and network era. The network will be a hotbed of creativity and innovation, where artist, technologist, academia, practitioner from both private and public spheres, actively engage with technology and address contemporary social, political and cultural concerns. With the success of Wikitopia in 2010, we will continue exploring how citizen media and social media reshape humankind in the era of network culture. We will also continue providing service and support to media artist and general public for the development of media art and strengthen the position of Videotage as a cultural hub of knowledge transfer for art, culture and technology in the local, regional and international regime. Acting as an entryway into the story of Northern Ireland, And Time, Again brings together six artists whose practices engage with Northern Ireland’s complex histories, contested identities, and enduring political legacies.

Through personal testimony, archival research, staged enactments, and site-specific documentation, the exhibition moves beyond familiar narratives of the Troubles and post-conflict society and offers more nuanced narratives, creating an essential space for contextually situated discursive reasoning and reflection.

Together, the six works reveal the fragility of narratives and the challenges of truly “knowing” a person or a place, particularly a place like Northern Ireland where deep religious and political divides preclude any idea of consensus.

《彼刻重來》匯集六位北愛爾蘭藝術家，透過錄像藝術梳理當地的故事。

從個人經歷、檔案研究、事件重演到場域限定的紀實影像，他們的藝術實踐基於北愛爾蘭錯綜複雜的歷史、受質疑的身份和揮之不去的政治影響。展覽闡述主流論述以外的「北愛問題」和衝突以後的社會面貌，並營造一個循脈絡理解的推論與反思空間。

六個作品揭示論述的脆弱之處和切實地「認識」一個人、一處地方的難處——尤其在宗教和政治矛盾根深蒂固的北愛爾蘭，任何共識終難達致。

This Moment, That Time: Videotage at 40 – Winnie Fu
彼時當刻：錄映太奇四十週年訪問系列 —— 傅慧儀

Following Ernest Fung, the next installment of Videotage’s This Moment, That Time oral history series features programme curator Winnie Fu. As the former director of the Microwave International New Media Art Festival, she reflects on her experience curating the early editions of the festival, witnessing its expansion from video to interactive media, bio art and beyond, as well as its evolution from being an initiative of Videotage into an independent organisation.

An active Videotage member in the 1990s, Winnie later became a member of its board of directors. She was also involved in the selection of works and programme curation for the early editions of the Microwave Festival. In the interview, she shares how her interest in image led her to meet artists such as Ellen Pau and Chan P*k Yu, and eventually to travel to and study in Germany on her own. Her exposure to the local art scene there would also inspire her approach to programme curation in Hong Kong.

Outside of Videotage, Winnie worked at the Hong Kong Film Archive for more than 20 years. She describes her work across the two organisations as occupying opposite ends of the spectrum between old and new media. She also unpacks her process of curating programmes at the Film Archive, while reflecting on how curiosity has shaped her experiences and broadened her vision over the years.

繼馮偉後，錄映太奇的《彼時當刻》訪問系列今次找來節目策劃人傅慧儀，暢談她策劃早期「微波」國際新媒體藝術節的心得，並見證它從錄像擴展到互動媒體、生物藝術等，同時從附屬於錄映太奇到成為獨立組織的歷程。

傅慧儀自1990 年代活躍於錄映太奇，其後成為董事會成員，並參與早期「微波」錄像節的作品徵集和節目策劃。她將與我們分享她對影像的興趣如何使她結識到鮑藹倫、陳碧如等藝術家，又因此隻身到德國進修、旅遊，甚至從當地的藝術氛圍得到活動策劃的啓迪。

在錄映太奇以外，傅慧儀亦任職於香港電影資料館二十多年，更直言自己的工作位處新舊媒體光譜的兩端。她在本次訪問中也會解構自己在資料館策劃節目的流程，並回望自己的好奇心如何成就她的經歷和視野。

張喆：明天，潮會再漲——藝術家分享

As part of Tomorrow, the Tide Will Rise Again, artist itit CHEUNG will be holding an artist sharing at Videotage on 27 September, moderated by YIP Kai Chun.

Beginning with the works in the exhibition, the artist will discuss how the exhibition developed from my extended bodily experience underwater in Hong Kong, and how tides, gravity, memory and bodily perception move across moving image, photography, objects, light and sound. He will also share parts of the works’ development and the relationships they form within the exhibition space.

Everyone is welcome. The sharing will be conducted mainly in Cantonese.

itit Cheung: Tomorrow, the Tide Will Rise Again | 張喆：明天，潮會再漲

Things change shape before they disappear, as ice becomes water. What is kept can outlast what it once held. Underwater, time moves differently. Breath no longer holds itself back; it keeps its own rhythm now, steady, regular, and even, marking the minutes rather than holding them.

Tomorrow, the Tide Will Rise Again is a solo exhibition by itit Cheung, built from the bodily experience of time spent submerged in water and the quiet persistence of ordinary things. Beneath its surface is a question the artist asks of himself, as much as of anyone who enters: what keeps us moving forward, when so much of what moves us cannot be named.

Cheung works from a simple belief. Ordinary things carry more presence than they appear to; quietly, they hold what we cannot say outright.

The exhibition does not illustrate grief or memory. It creates the conditions in which they can be felt.

What holds it together is a single observation. Loss does not end, it changes form; things can be held past their ending. The sea has always risen and fallen, gently, for the moon; and now, it is also rising for other reasons. Perhaps this is the most honest shape we have for how we carry what we cannot put down. The moon pulls the tide without the tide ever knowing why.

Tomorrow, the Tide Will Rise Again is on view at Videotage, Hong Kong, from now until 4 October 2026.

事物在消失之前，會先改變形態，如冰變成水。被留住的，可以比它曾經承載的東西，活得更久。水下，時間流動的方式不一樣。呼吸不再屏住，而是有了自己的節奏，持續、規律、均勻，標記著分秒，而不是把它們留住。

《明天，潮會再漲》是張喆的個人展覽，生長於長時間浸沒在水中的身體經驗，以及日常事物的安靜持續。在它的表面之下，藏著一個藝術家對自己，也對每一個走進來的人發出的問題：當牽引我們的大多數東西都無法被命名，是什麼讓我們仍然往前走。

張喆的創作出於一個簡單的信念，日常的事物承載著比表面看起來更多的存在，本身就悄悄盛著我們說不出口的東西。展覽不是在說明悲傷或記憶，而是創造讓它們可以被感受的條件。

支撐整個展覽的是一個簡單的觀察，失落不會終結，它換了形態，事物可以留在自己的終點之後。海水，一直為了月亮溫柔地漲與退；而現在，它也為了別的原因漲著。這或許是我們承載放不下的事，最誠實的形狀。月亮牽引著潮水，而潮水從不需要知道為什麼。

《明天，潮會再漲》即日起至10月4日在香港錄映太奇展出。

Scale of Passage: JKT

In summer and winter, strong monsoon gusts sweep across the Asia-Pacific, which come as soon as they dissipate.

From Nanyang during the colonial times to ‘Southeast Asia’ following post-war decolonisation, the lived experiences on the islands in between the Indian and Pacific Oceans are ultimately simplified and flattened under generalised names, regardless of their forms of governance.

As the wind turns, the people are driven by various forces to leave their homelands in pursuit of the uncertain promise of a better life. As time passes and journeys unfold, identities, memories and traumas shift and settle. In displacement, some fragments are forgotten, while others remain with the wandering body. Documentation and personal sharings are where fragments of such diasporic experiences collide, awaiting to be felt, questioned, and reimagined.

As shapeless as it seems, the monsoon is critical for the Southeast Asian countries’ trading relations, monitoring the migration pattern of the diasporic communities, and forming a rhythmic pulse in people’s daily lives. By retracing existing routes, we seek to sense the historical undercurrents beneath visible landmarks, and to bring the climate into view as we consider the landscape.

Following its presentation at TIDF in May, Scales of Passage, the touring screening series co-curated by Videotage and Forum Lenteng, will be part of the 2026 ARKIPEL Festival. Beginning with the shared symbolism of guardian spirits, the programme treats migrants’ and their descendants’ experiences as the ‘scales’ of these metaphoric beings, tracing fragments that shape diasporic identities.

Videotage will also present the screening programme Can you see the Monsoon? during the festival, echoing the historical reflection in Scales of Passage. By turning the lens towards the land and climate, the programme broadens the scope of the showcase from Southeast Asia to the Asia-Pacific.

Based on their sensory experience, fragments of memories, or a non-human perspective, artists featured in the programme inquire into the origins of wind and water, exploring how these forces shape one’s desire and transform the landscape.

冬夏兩季，亞太地區總有陣陣季候風吹至，來得急，去得快。

座落在印度洋與太平洋之間的諸島，統稱從殖民時期的「南洋」，演變到二戰後去殖浪潮下的「東南亞」，但不論是被殖民還是立國自治，島上的生活經驗都被寥寥數字簡化、壓平。

海風轉向，人受不同的力量驅使，遠渡重洋，在未知之中尋找安身立命的希冀。箇中的身份、記憶和創傷隨年沖刷，有些在離散中逐點失去，有些則被身體所銘記。點點滴滴匯集在紀錄影像與片言隻語間，等待被重新領略、批判與想像。

季候風看似無形，卻掌管東南亞列國貿易的命脈、人民遷徙的流向，以至築成日常生活的規律節奏。重新踏上既有的軌跡，我們試圖在可見的地標外，碰觸歷史浪潮中的一道道洋流，將隱形的氣候納入我們對地景的認知中。

錄映太奇與 Forum Lenteng 攜手呈獻的巡迴放映節目系列《鱗光映盪》，繼今年五月在台灣國際紀錄片影展首映後，將在 2026 ARKIPEL 電影節舉行放映專場。節目從香港和東南亞相近的神明符號出發，將移民及其後代的經歷視為牠的「鱗片」，探究割裂的歷程如何重構離散身分。

錄映太奇亦會策劃放映節目《風從哪裏來》，呼應《鱗光映盪》所聚焦的歷史流轉。節目把焦點從東南亞擴大至亞太地區，並將鏡頭移至土地和氣候。參與節目的藝術家運用身體感知、記憶的碎片，或套用非人類視角，想像風雨從何而來，又如何影響人類的慾望和形塑地景。

Videotage is recruiting a Netherlands-based designer, maker, or observer to participate in a digital culture residency in Hong Kong in Spring 2027.

Co-organised by Creative Industries Fund NL with Videotage, the residency offers the selected participants the opportunity to spend two or three months at Videotage’s studio space. They will have the space to conduct research, broaden their networks, develop new works drawing inspiration from Hong Kong, and present their findings or completed works.

Participants will have a chance to explore new methodologies, widen their creative practice, and produce work that pushes the boundaries of digital culture. The 2027 edition takes the technological “black box” phenomenon as a starting point and invites participants to respond to this theme within the context of the residency.

Please indicate your preferred period in your application. Depending on the duration of the residency, the selected artist will receive either €5,000 for 2 months or €6,500 for 3 months from Creative Industries Fund NL to cover travel costs, insurance policies, living expenses, compensation for time invested, and material and transportation costs. The costs for accommodation, use of the studio space and facilitation by Videotage will be directly covered by the Fund.

leaks are ubiquitous, bursting gas, leaking pipes and oozing tears, and so ubiquitous that its figurative meaning sounds even more native, circulating gossips are leaks, whistleblowers are, too, leaks. Metaphorical leak, inheriting the brokenness from physical leak, is associated with illegality, immorality or at least shamefulness. Or, is it?

In the video essay, leak in the promiscuous machines and prurient governing entities is brought to the forefront as systemic vulnerabilities. A message you send out to your loved one over the TCP/IP protocol, as Chun noted, is slutty. Audio and video signal cables are constantly radiating RF emanations. Buffer overflows when data overwrites, memory leaks can be used to navigate into forbidden memory, software ages, like human beings, ageing leads to more leaks. In addition to that, our faces are reduced to facial features for machine learning, personal medical records end as image embedding in a training dataset. Our voices leak as analyzable waves, irises leak as unique high-contrast photographs. We, as users and as citizens, are encouraged by the tech giants and governments to leak, while the large language models trained from the data we leaked, refuse to “participate in or encourage any illegal activities, including leaking.”

'let yourself leak a little' leaks through the cracks on the leaking gas pipe, the space station, the express warehouse, into the leaking signals, leaky compression algorithms, leaky network packets, leaking categories, leaked tiny face and tiny activity dataset, to ask who is making it’s not ok to leak, who is capturing leak, how leak is weaponized and who is killing leak to stop solidarity from happening.

This experimental documentary circulates around interviews with four veterans who worked all their lives in analogue (=celluloid) film laboratories and animation studios in Mumbai, and who all lost their businesses and jobs around 2012–14, when the Hindi film industry went through a drastic shift to digital production. They reflect on the loss of their craftsmanship, but also on the philosophies of their handmade film practice versus readymade digital solutions. While the film drifts into various related and unrelated scenarios, shot on the streets of Mumbai, we learn about the art of living and working under precarious conditions in India and survival strategies in one of the most crowded and commercial cities in the world. Finally everything results in a futile collage of nostalgia and memories, mashed up with the absurd aesthetics of AI slop.

An expanded multi-genre documentary within the constraints of the so-called Masala Formula, popularly known from Indian cinema.

Will GriefBots become our new way of mourning? These artificial intelligences, created from the data of our deceased loved ones, allow us to keep talking to them, to extend the bond beyond death. Through an intimate story of loss, the film explores the afterlife of our data and the ways digital technology is reshaping our rituals, between memory and the commodification of emotion.
