[ ] 公開招募駐留藝術家 Open Call for resident media artists
Now until 21/10/2026 | 1600 CEST

Videotage is recruiting a Netherlands-based designer, maker, or observer to participate in a digital culture residency in Hong Kong in Spring 2027.

Co-organised by Creative Industries Fund NL with Videotage, the residency offers the selected participants the opportunity to spend two or three months at Videotage’s studio space. They will have the space to conduct research, broaden their networks, develop new works drawing inspiration from Hong Kong, and present their findings or completed works.

Participants will have a chance to explore new methodologies, widen their creative practice, and produce work that pushes the boundaries of digital culture. The 2027 edition takes the technological “black box” phenomenon as a starting point and invites participants to respond to this theme within the context of the residency.

Please indicate your preferred period in your application. Depending on the duration of the residency, the selected artist will receive either €5,000 for 2 months or €6,500 for 3 months from Creative Industries Fund NL to cover travel costs, insurance policies, living expenses, compensation for time invested, and material and transportation costs. The costs for accommodation, use of the studio space and facilitation by Videotage will be directly covered by the Fund.

Are you a designer, maker or observer interested in this opportunity? Submit your proposal to Creative Industries Fund NL by 21 October, 2026.

leaks are ubiquitous, bursting gas, leaking pipes and oozing tears, and so ubiquitous that its figurative meaning sounds even more native, circulating gossips are leaks, whistleblowers are, too, leaks. Metaphorical leak, inheriting the brokenness from physical leak, is associated with illegality, immorality or at least shamefulness. Or, is it?

In the video essay, leak in the promiscuous machines and prurient governing entities is brought to the forefront as systemic vulnerabilities. A message you send out to your loved one over the TCP/IP protocol, as Chun noted, is slutty. Audio and video signal cables are constantly radiating RF emanations. Buffer overflows when data overwrites, memory leaks can be used to navigate into forbidden memory, software ages, like human beings, ageing leads to more leaks. In addition to that, our faces are reduced to facial features for machine learning, personal medical records end as image embedding in a training dataset. Our voices leak as analyzable waves, irises leak as unique high-contrast photographs. We, as users and as citizens, are encouraged by the tech giants and governments to leak, while the large language models trained from the data we leaked, refuse to “participate in or encourage any illegal activities, including leaking.”

'let yourself leak a little' leaks through the cracks on the leaking gas pipe, the space station, the express warehouse, into the leaking signals, leaky compression algorithms, leaky network packets, leaking categories, leaked tiny face and tiny activity dataset, to ask who is making it’s not ok to leak, who is capturing leak, how leak is weaponized and who is killing leak to stop solidarity from happening.

This experimental documentary circulates around interviews with four veterans who worked all their lives in analogue (=celluloid) film laboratories and animation studios in Mumbai, and who all lost their businesses and jobs around 2012–14, when the Hindi film industry went through a drastic shift to digital production. They reflect on the loss of their craftsmanship, but also on the philosophies of their handmade film practice versus readymade digital solutions. While the film drifts into various related and unrelated scenarios, shot on the streets of Mumbai, we learn about the art of living and working under precarious conditions in India and survival strategies in one of the most crowded and commercial cities in the world. Finally everything results in a futile collage of nostalgia and memories, mashed up with the absurd aesthetics of AI slop.

An expanded multi-genre documentary within the constraints of the so-called Masala Formula, popularly known from Indian cinema.

Will GriefBots become our new way of mourning? These artificial intelligences, created from the data of our deceased loved ones, allow us to keep talking to them, to extend the bond beyond death. Through an intimate story of loss, the film explores the afterlife of our data and the ways digital technology is reshaping our rituals, between memory and the commodification of emotion.

In the summer of 2019, I returned to my hometown Jiangxi Province and traveled with friends to Lushan Mountain to escape the heat; this trip was the first time in more than 20 years that I had visited Lushan. As a child, my mother and grandparents frequently took me to Lushan during the summer. We would stay there for two months at a time. In the mountain, we would look at the scenery, go to the cinema and enjoy the time in the Kuling park.

How Orchids Think: Becoming Orchid is an experimental documentary that steps away from established narratives of orchids and reconsiders how my ways of sensing and understanding are formed through encounters with them. The film brings together moving image, bodily performance, and text, not to produce knowledge about orchids, but to approach them as companions in thinking, as a form of life that continually reshapes how I look, move, and experience the world.

In the film, “becoming orchid” is neither imitation nor simple symbolism. It unfolds as a process that takes shape through walking, pausing, and bodily response. I move among orchids while remaining open to a state in between the human and the nonhuman, allowing thought to emerge not only through language, but through the interactions of body, objects, and environments.

(Excerpted from work synopsis)

Desktop films capture the time we spend in front of our screens. I realized that the mostly unpaid time and effort we invest in social media—along with the immense emotional and political labor involved— could serve as a subject for “desktop cinema.” People conduct research on their computers and phones, and this is one such study: it explores the natural resources extracted from the earth that are believed to boost our serotonin levels.

The idea is to reflect on the “screen time” of a hypothetical individual living in our era. This person watches the events unfolding in places like Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan, Rojava, and Congo, grappling with the world's complicity in crimes against humanity while struggling to sleep—like many of us. Would this premise make a documentary? Can we make a desktop documentary that reflects the collective anger and devastation experienced while watching the livestreamed genocide in Palestine? This question arose in my mind, and I pursued it. It took the form of what we might call a desktop-diary. However, this is not intended to be a first-person narrative; rather, it's an experimentation on 'desktop cinema': If we direct our gaze to these screens, would it tell a story about our times and our community?

As Videotage celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, we are launching an oral history series on YouTube. By interviewing various key figures and searching through our archives, we seek to map out the events that shaped Videotage’s path over the years.

For the first installment, we interviewed artist and video editor Ernest Fung. An active Videotage member in the 1990s, he shares his encounter with the artist collective, Videotage’s early collaboration with Zuni Icosahedron, and the advent of non-linear video editing with the Media 100 system.

As one of the first artists who received a HKADC grant for feature-length video production, he also explains the thought processes behind some of his signature works such as On the Road, as well as reflecting on transformations in the medium then and now.

Other installments are rolling out in the coming months. Stay tuned!
