【Expert Tips: Fill Your Child's "Emotional Love Tank" with Love Languages 📦❤️】

As parents, we may face many challenges when communicating with our children. This is often not because we do not love them, but because we may not be expressing our care in a way they can understand and receive.👦🏻👧🏻

Ms. Gigi Pang, Chair of the Division of Counselling Psychology of the Hong Kong Psychological Society, explains that every child has an "Emotional Love Tank" inside them. We can think of the parent-child relationship as a “love bank account”. Words and actions that show care, companionship and encouragement are “deposits”, while discipline and criticism are “withdrawals”. If parents and caregivers do not make regular “deposits”, a child’s emotional love tank may become “overdrawn” when discipline is needed, potentially putting strain on the relationship. 💔

To make a long-term investment in the relationship, and help children develop the emotional security and resilience to face challenges, we need to use the five love languages to keep filling their emotional love tank. 💪🏻✨

👉 Comment "Love", and we will send you practical tips on using the five love languages to better connect with your child and understand their inner world. 📩

Every child has the right to express their views and to be heard!

Save the Children Hong Kong recently co-organised the“I Have Something to Say” Children’s Forum 2026 with the Hong Kong Committee on Children's Rights (HKCCR) at The University of Hong Kong. The forum gave children a platform to share their views on social issues and matters affecting them, as well as present what they had explored and learned.

Our Director of Hong Kong Programme, Ms. Wong Shek Hung, was delighted to see the children come well prepared and speak with confidence and clarity. They shared thoughtful and inspiring perspectives on issues affecting children. Our Senior Hong Kong Programme Manager, Mr Kit Lam, also joined the session on ‘‘Psychological and emotional stress among children in Hong Kong’’, responding to children's observations and views on mental health.

We believe that children have the right to express their views on matters that affect them, and society has a responsibility to listen to and value their voices. 💛 By creating more opportunities for children to participate and share their views, we hope to work with different sectors of society to build a more inclusive and child-friendly environment.

The children’s presentations from the forum will also be compiled into an e-book, enabling more people to learn about their views and experiences. Stay tuned! 📖

Together, let us continue to champion children's rights and listen to and respond to every child’s voice. 💪

The recent loss of young lives has once again caused deep concern across our community. In an opinion piece published by HK01, Wong Shek Hung, Director of Hong Kong Programme at Save the Children Hong Kong, explains that families and schools are vital sources of support for children. However, parents and teachers are also under considerable pressure. Instead of simply asking schools to do more, we must give them the time, training and professional support to build trust with students and respond to their needs earlier.

The article calls for:
💛 Stronger positive parenting support
🏫 More school social workers, educational psychologists and mental health professionals
👩🏻‍🏫 Less administrative pressure and stronger training for teachers
🤝 Peer-support systems that connect students with trusted adults and professional help
👂 Meaningful child participation in relevant policies and services

Our recent research finds that many children experiencing emotional distress turn first to friends or social media rather than adults. They may not expect adults to solve every problem. Often, they simply want someone willing to listen. Children should not have to struggle alone. Families, schools and society must work together to create an environment where children’s wellbeing is valued, setbacks are accepted and asking for help feels safe.

💛 If your child has recently been experiencing nightmares, difficulty concentrating, or unexplained stomach aches, parents and caregivers may need to pay closer attention to their emotional wellbeing. Sometimes, children may not tell us when they are feeling anxious. Instead, anxiety may be expressed through changes in behaviour, physical discomfort, or even silence.

As children adjust to a new school year, they may be navigating changes in their environment, relationships and academic demands. As parents and caregivers, taking a little more time to listen and understand can help us recognise their needs and provide the support they need.

🎥 Watch "Through a Child's Eyes: Anxiety", a video produced by Save the Children Hong Kong and Po Leung K*k, to learn about the common signs of anxiety in children and how we can support them through emotional ups and downs.

-
Starting from this August, Save the Children Hong Kong is launching “Every Moment Matters”, a campaign that puts children first. We aim to help every adult recognise the subtle signs of emotional distress and respond to children’s needs before the moment is missed. 🫂 Let us begin with a small but meaningful action. Before the moment is gone, start with a knock. 💛

Follow us and stay tuned for the Every Moment Matters campaign, and join us in listening to children’s voices. 👂🏻
