https://www.facebook.com/share/1dtJ7i2qCP/
Hawaii just made a decision that’s sparking conversation across the country.
Governor Josh Green signed a law that bans octopus farming. It stops companies from raising octopuses in captivity for food. This goes beyond one state. It shows how our thinking is changing.
Octopuses aren’t like typical farm animals. They solve puzzles, use tools, and recognize individual humans. They’re curious and sensitive. Keeping them in industrial tanks raises serious concerns about suffering and wellbeing.
The environmental risks matter too. Octopus farms would need to feed them other marine animals, putting more pressure on already fragile ocean ecosystems. Pollution, waste, and the risk of escapes add to the concern.
Hawaii acted early. Lawmakers didn’t wait for the industry to grow and then try to clean up the damage. They listened to expert warnings and chose prevention.
The ban applies to farming. Wild octopus fishing is still legal. But the message is clear: as we learn more about animal intelligence and ocean health, we’re rethinking which industries we should support.
