Today, on International Domestic Workers Day, we recognise the vital contributions of domestic workers and the essential role they play in sustaining households, enabling economic participation, and supporting communities. ๐ŸŽ‰

In Hong Kong, migrant domestic workers are central to the functioning of many families - providing care for children, older persons, and households. Despite their contributions, many continue to face barriers that affect their rights, access to services, and overall wellbeing.

At HELP, we remain committed to providing emergency assistance, mental health and wellbeing support, upskilling opportunities, and rights education - ensuring domestic workers have the knowledge, resources, and support needed to navigate challenges and build more secure futures.

If you believe in this work, you can be part of it. Your donation can help ensure that domestic workers have access to critical services and opportunities for empowerment. โค๏ธ

Scammers in Hong Kong are pretending to be police officers to scam you out of money. ๐Ÿšจ

This scam is common throughout Hong Kong and targets many different people. The caller may sound official and pressure you to act quickly. The police will never ask you to transfer money over the phone. If you receive a call like this do not transfer any money and do not share your bank details or personal information. Report it immediatelyโ€ผ๏ธ

HELP Team at University of Chicago Booth School of Business! ๐Ÿ““

Our team recently had the privilege of joining the Nonprofit Core Competency (NCC) Workshop Series by the University of Chicago Booth School of Business where we learned about entrepreneurial leadership and governance with fellow NGO leaders. ๐Ÿ’ก

With new tools, frameworks, and strategies always emerging, we keep coming back to the same question: what does this mean for the domestic workers we work with? How does it help us show up better for them? ๐Ÿค”

The needs of migrant domestic workers are constantly evolving and our response to them should reflect that. That's what keeps us learning, growing, and finding better ways to support the community. . ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’ช

Huge thanks to Kalmond Ma and Iris Cho for hosting us at Chicago Booth, and to Prof. Todd Connor for sharing such valuable learnings over two inspiring days! ๐Ÿค

May arrived in Hong Kong to build a better future for herself and her family. Without an agency or a support network she stepped into an unfamiliar environment and relied only on her employment. Throughout her employment she faced difficult working conditions, including unfair pay, long hours, and inadequate rest. Unaware where to turn for help and available resources she endured these circumstances for a long time.

When we connected with May, we made her feel safe and encouraged her to share her experience openly. We explained her labour rights and options available and ensured she had the information available to make an informed decision. We worked with a labour union to get May her compensation. She has since returned home to her family.

We're here to help you understand your employment rights and options. Reach out to us on WhatsApp +852 5936 3780 for support. ๐Ÿ’ฌ

Access to healthcare is a fundamental right but for many migrant domestic workers it's not always within reach. For those already navigating a precarious situation, the consequences ripple far beyond their health: illegal dismissals, cancelled visas, loss of income etc.

In a recent article from Hong Kong Free Press HKFP, our Head of Programmes, Rachel Li, spoke with Raquel Carvalho about the compounding challenges migrant domestic workers face when dealing with healthcare issues.

Nancy experienced this first hand. After suffering a sudden heart attack, her employment was terminated immediately, losing access to affordable medical care at the moment her need was most critical.

We support Nancy through hospital visits, case counselling, and the complex process of navigating the healthcare system. Her resilience throughout has been remarkable - and her journey highlighted the systemic gaps that leave so many workers without legal protection or access to care precisely when both their health and their livelihood are most at risk.

This is why our key priority is supporting the ๐‡๐ž๐š๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก ๐š๐ง๐ ๐–๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐›๐ž๐ข๐ง๐  of domestic workers We provide personalised support, medical access, and guidance through Hong Kongโ€™s healthcare system, while also engaging employers on their responsibilities.

These issues rarely resolve on their own, and addressing only one side of the relationship is not enough. Lasting solutions come from both workers and employers having access to the right information, support, and tools. A loan that looks affordable on paper can be illegal once all costs are added up. Processing fees, handling charges, and penalties all count toward your effective interest rate. In Hong Kong, any rate above 48% per annum is illegal. โ€ผ๏ธ

Not all moneylenders are trustworthy. Even licensed ones can charge illegal rates, and some actively target migrant domestic workers with quick cash offers and deductions that are easy to miss. By the time the problem is clear, the debt has already grown.

Before signing anything, check the full cost and verify the lender on the official registry. ๐Ÿ” Use the official interest rate calculator to check your rate: https://www.cr.gov.hk/en/services/money-lenders/calculator.htm

Borrowing from an unlicensed lender in Hong Kong can mean illegal interest rates, harassment, and debt that grows faster than you can repay. These situations can quickly become dangerous and are very difficult to get out of. โš ๏ธ

Predatory lenders actively target migrant domestic workers. Always verify that the lender is on the official registry. ๐Ÿ”
https://www.cr.gov.hk/en/services/money-lenders/search/licensee-search.htm

Before taking out any loan, ask yourself honestly: can I repay this on my current salary? If the answer is uncertain, a loan may create more problems than it solves. ๐Ÿฆ

Not sure how to navigate this difficult situation? Send us the details on WhatsApp +852 5936 3780 and we can explain to you all the options before you before you commit to anything. ๐Ÿ’ฌ

June came to Hong Kong to build a better life for her family. When she became pregnant, she was asked to leave her job. Under Hong Kong law, a pregnant employee cannot be dismissed, and with the Labour Department's support, she was able to stay in her role. But the challenges were only just beginning.

After giving birth, June became a new mother and was feeling exhausted, and overwhelmed by emotions she couldnโ€™t explain. She, like any other mother, expected her baby to go home with her. Instead, she was put in an impossible situation of not being allowed to bring her baby home.

Week after week she waited for documents, extremely worried about the future of her child and imagining the worst case. Meanwhile, the hospital urged her to discharge her child. ๐Ÿฅ

Far from home and navigating unfamiliar systems, she turned to us for help.

We liaised with the consulate and hospital to fast-track her baby's passport so she could finally reunite with her child. We also secured her full entitlements, and filed a medical fee waiver for her baby's hospital costs to reduce the financial burden created by a process that had already cost her so much. June has since returned home safely with her baby. ๐Ÿก

If youโ€™re a domestic worker or employer, reach out to us for if you need guidance on how to navigate sensitive situations like these.
