Medical Outreachers

Medical Outreachers Click "About" for Executive Committee List Outreaching - that is our main notion. It is this simple. Yes, we are indeed advocates of the ‘human touch’.

Through adventuring out of our comfort zone to reach out to the needy, we believe we could cultivate our passion and devotion in the practice of medicine. Let our flame not be diminished, but rather, spread to our neighbouring friends.

Team A is in charge of organising local services, and we currently run a total of 5 projects. Firstly, our visits to the Grantham Hospital’s Hospice Centre shows care for residents living in the palliative wards. Trips with the Salvation Army to visit the homeless population has a similar aim, as well as improving the healthcare knowledge within the community. Then, the Rare Diseases project aims to assist patients with uncommon diseases, who are often faced with a lack of healthcare support and funding as a result, as well as raising awareness for their distinctive difficulties. Finally, we provide free health talks and basic health checks for domestic helpers, asylum seekers and refugees, as these groups of people often have difficulty in seeking Hong Kong government-funded healthcare.

This year, our biggest challenge would be finding a way to continue our projects and bring meaningful impact to our service targets, despite COVID-19 restrictions. While having to digitally convey some of our knowledge and care, we also hope to adapt some projects into a smaller size, and keep planning services for when restrictions are lifted. We are very keen for your help in these services, so stay tuned for more updates!

Medicare Sichuan
In this 8-day service trip to Liangshan, Sichuan, our executive committee members and participants will together design a health education curriculum for primary school children and perform a variety of services in local villages, allowing participants to sharpen their clinical and communication skills. We hope that through this programme we can enhance the health literacy of the underprivileged children and improve the health conditions of the villagers .

Leprosy Sichuan
The Leprosy Sichuan service trip offers participants an opportunity to explore the way of life of recovered Leprosy patients in Mainland China. Participants will have an invaluable chance to observe ulcer treatment conducted by nurses. Participants will also conduct basic health checks for the leprosy patients and raise their health awareness through health education. Through providing medical and spiritual care to the villagers, participants can reach out to and care for neglected groups in our society.

Namtar, Kalikatar and Bharta villages in Nepal

Over the past years, Team C has travelled to Namtar, Kalikatar, and Bharta via multiple pilot and evaluation trips in order to address the health gaps present in the local villages of Nepal. From health education to household visits to health camps, we aim to empower locals by equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills to live a healthy lifestyle. In addition to the 7 pre-existing health curriculum topics, we also plan to introduce new topics according to the prevalent issues affecting the local community.

Though the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has led to the cancellation of our 2020 evaluation trip and resulted in many uncertainties for our upcoming 2021 plans, Team C strives to continue with our service efforts by keeping in contact with the locals and digitizing our interventions. Furthermore, we will also broaden our connections with NGOs of a similar vision, while providing financial assistance to our service targets through fund raising activities in Hong Kong.

We aim to tailor interventions according to the needs of the local villagers in order to foster an environment that encourages healthy hygiene and behavioural practices, ultimately paving the way to a self-sustaining community in our service targets.

- Reach out -

One of the key visions of Medical Outreachers is to reach out to communities in need. As common members of a united society, we hope to think beyond the confinements of textbooks and lectures and actively seek ways to directly serve the needy with our medical knowledge locally, regionally and internationally.

- Create -

Another key aspect of MO is to create long-lasting impacts on the needy. During this time and age, especially with the raging COVID-19 pandemic, the idea of create is particularly important as we try to come up with unique ways to maintain the human touch with various service targets, allowing the legacy of MO to live on sustainably.

- Inspire -

Finally, we aspire to inspire. It is our goal to inspire hope in the needy, to let people know they are cared and that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. In an age where hatred and violence run rampant, we hope to bring some positivity to the world through small deeds, to remind both medical students and service targets that compassion and care the greatest components of human nature.
