The Hong Kong Translation Society Welcomes Dr. Liu Dongping as Honorary Advisor

The Hong Kong Translation Society welcomes Dr. Dongping Liu as our Honorary Advisor.

Dr. Liu currently serves as Higher Education Industry Lead at Amazon Web Services (AWS) and as Chair of the Hong Kong Young Computer Scientists & Engineers Forum, China Computer Federation. A recipient of the First Prize of the Beijing Science and Technology Award, he has published extensively and holds multiple patents in the fields of artificial intelligence and high‑performance computing.

The Society looks forward to benefiting from Dr. Liu’s expertise and insights, particularly in areas where emerging technologies intersect with language, translation, and education. We warmly welcome him to this new role!

The HKTS Executive Committee is recruiting student helpers to provide voluntary support for Society activities.

This initiative aims to offer students practical experience while fostering the next generation of HKTS members. Duties include administrative support, event assistance, material preparation, and occasional meeting attendance. Benefits
include:

• Opportunities to work with Executive Committee members on policy papers and academic collaborations.
• A certificate of participation.
• One year complimentary student membership of HKTS.

Eligibility: Current university students in Hong Kong who are reliable and able to commit time on a voluntary basis.

The Hong Kong Translation Society (HKTS) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM), F. C. Lo Scholarships Presentation Ceremony, and Luncheon Talk on Friday, September 27, 2025, marking a significant day for the local translation community.

Held at the Bistro NTT by ATTIC in Kowloon Tong, the event brought together members, distinguished guests, and rising stars in the field to celebrate achievements, conduct important society business, and delve into the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in translation.

The afternoon began with the Annual General Meeting, where the HKTS leadership reviewed the society’s work over the past year, presented the financial report, and outlined plans for the coming term.

The F. C. Lo Scholarships Presentation Ceremony followed. The scholarships are a testament to the HKTS's commitment to nurturing talent. A deserving cohort of students were awarded, recognizing their exceptional academic achievements and potential in translation studies. Colleagues applauded the dedication and hard work of the scholarship winners, and we thank F. C. Lo for his kind support.

After this, the talk “Delivering Results with AI in Translation Services: Driving business outcomes with AWS AI for language professionals” was delivered by Dr. Dongping Liu, Senior Industry Business Development Manager of Education at Amazon Web Services (AWS). Dr. Liu provided an insightful presentation on how AWS AI technologies are being leveraged to enhance efficiency, quality, and business outcomes within the translation sector, sharing several case studies of how a combination of human and AI translation is contributing positively to society. The session was followed by a lively Q&A and further discussions among attendees, underscoring the keen interest in adopting these innovative technologies. We'd like to thank Dr. Liu for his expert sharing.

Another detailed sharing was provided by Liu Peng from Shanghai Yizhe Info Tech Co. Ltd., including how the company is increasingly leveraging AI to provide translation services to several stakeholders.

Beyond the formal agenda, the event provided an invaluable opportunity for networking over lunch. Attendees connected with peers, academics, and industry leaders, forging new professional relationships and strengthening the bonds within the vibrant Hong Kong translation community. We thank everyone who joined us to celebrate the scholarship recipients and explore the exciting future of our profession.

The 11th Asia-Pacific Translation and Interpreting Forum (APTIF11) was held from 21 to 23 May 2025 at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). The forum was co-organised by the International Federation of Translators (FIT) and its Asian Regional Centre, known as FIT Asia, HKBU and the Hong Kong Translation Society (HKTS). Launched in 1995 under the aegis of FIT, APTIF, formerly known as Asian Translators Forum, is a triennial event aimed at fostering collaboration and exchanges within the region’s translation and interpreting community.

Themed Culture, Connectivity and Technology: Translating Communities, Transforming Perspectives, APTIF11 brought together around 400 representatives from the translation, interpreting, language technology, and academic research sectors across Asia and beyond, discussing how artificial intelligence and technology connect and integrate with language, translation and intercultural communication.

The event kicked off on the morning of 21 May with an opening ceremony addressed by Ms. Alison Rodriguez, FIT President, Mr. Gao Anming, FIT Council Member, Executive Vice President and Secretary General of the Translators Association of China (TAC) and Editor-in-Chief of the China International Communications Group, Prof. Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU and Prof. Janice Pan, Chair of the APTIF11 Organising Committee, HKTS President, Director of the Academy of Language and Culture, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Professor of the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies of HKBU.

The opening ceremony was followed by the Honorary Fellowship Conferment Ceremony of the HKTS. Recipients include Prof. Mona Baker of the University of Oslo, Prof. Sin-Wai Chan of St. Francis University, Hong Kong, Prof. Sun Yifeng of the University of Macau and editor-in-chief of Babel, and Prof. Tan Zaixi of HKBU.

During the three-day event, APTIF11 featured three master lectures, four keynote speeches, and over 40 themed parallel sessions, showcasing more than 200 presentations on the latest developments in the field. The conference also hosted a series of AI-themed pre-conference workshops featuring industry leaders such as NVIDIA, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Hong Kong, as well as a public exhibition highlighting exhibitors including Anhui iFLYREC Co., Ltd., Beijing NewClass Digital Technology, Shanghai Yizhe Info Tech Co., Ltd., and Timekettle. In addition, to promote inclusivity, Hong Kong Sign Language interpreting services were provided throughout the four-day programme.

The event concluded with closing remarks by Mr. Xing Yutang, FIT Asia Chair and Executive Deputy Secretary General of TAC and Mr. Yau Waiping, Director of Centre for Translation of HKBU, both highlighting the significance and outcomes of the forum in the context of advancement of technology and extensive application of AI in the profession.
