Oars Up: Scouts in Action

Members of the 4th Hong Kong Sea Scout Troop completed the Hong Kong China Rowing Association’s Board Rowing Course (Star 1), an 8‑hour introduction that converts SUPs into single‑scull “oar boards.”

Scouts progressed from indoor erg training to pontoon simulators and then to longer on‑water sessions, mastering timing, boat control, safety drills and teamwork. Star 2 builds on these skills and links to the Rowing Boatman Badge, while also opening pathways to youth rowing events and novice race categories for continued development.

*Save the Date: Youth Sculling Event on 31 October 2026 Island*

The next Youth Autumn Sculling event is on 31 October 2026 to be held at Middle Island, RHKYC. This youth sculling regatta includes a novice category, a great chance for Scouts who’ve completed Star 2 or 3 to race, gain experience and put their boat control, timing and teamwork to the test. If your Scout is working toward the Rowing Boatman Badge or wants to try competitive sculling, mark the date and start preparing now.

A proud moment for the 4th Sea Scouts Hong Kong! ⚓️🇭🇰

We had the honour of meeting Sir Russell Coutts – sailing legend, 5-time America's Cup winner. As sea scouts, meeting someone who has shaped our sport was truly inspiring. 🙌(Oh, and he also announced SailGP is coming to Victoria Harbour in Jan 2027 )

SailGP's CEO Sir Russell Coutts is desperately keen to see the next generation of young talent breaking through to the top level!

Proud to be part of Hong Kong's sailing community. 🌊⛵️

⚡⛵ 勁啊！我哋海童軍攞咗獎返嚟啦！🏆🎉

由香港童軍總會東九龍地域舉辦嘅帆船比賽，於5月2-3日在白沙灣譚華正海上活動中心舉行。對手個個都好強，有教練級高手，也有校際帆船隊的精英；2天的比賽，共賽了6場，我哋嘅海童軍Daemien & Lucas 發揮「童軍勇敢不怕難」的精神，完全無畏無懼，乘風破浪，在Pico Class (Team Race)最終勇奪第二名！🥈💪

呢班年輕水手唔止技術掂，仲玩得好開心、好盡興！團隊合作、笑聲、拼搏精神，全部拉滿！🌊😆 Let’s give them 3 cheers!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

⚡⛵ WE DID IT! The 4th HK Sea Scouts bagged the trophy! 🏆 🎉

What a weekend! Our Sea Scouts sailed their hearts out at the sailing competition organized by the East Kowloon Region of the HK Scout Association – and guess what? We came home with the 1st Runner-Up at the Pico Class (Team Race)! 🥈💪

Windy? Not quite. Tough competitors? Absolutely!! But did our team have fun? YOU BET! 😆🌊

From high-fives to battle cries, from tacking through gusts to grinning all the way to the finish line – our young sailors showed that you can race hard and smile harder. Teamwork, energy, and a whole lot of laughter powered us through.

A huge shoutout to all helpers at Pai Sha Wah T.W.C. Sea Activity Centre for organizing such a fantastic event, and a special thank you to Mrs. Kay Rawbone BEM, Co-Founder & CEO of Sailability Hong Kong (pictured with us!) for her encouragement and support.

We're already counting down to the next challenge. Onwards, upwards, and always having fun on the water! ⛵✨

🌊⚓ 海童軍參與維園115周年嘉年華！

為慶祝香港童軍總會成立115周年，維多利亞公園一連兩日舉辦海陸空主題嘉年華，過百個攤位遊戲，好玩又熱鬧！我哋一班海童軍當然最興奮見到不同元素融入其中，真係眼界大開。喺陽光下與來自各區嘅童軍伙伴一齊玩遊戲、交流心得，開心又有意義! 齊齊慶祝呢個重要嘅里程碑！

🌊⚓ Sea Scouts at the HK Scout Association's 115th Anniversary Fun Fair!

To celebrate 115 years of Scouting in Hong Kong, a spectacular fun fair with over 100 game stalls took place at Victoria Park on 11th & 12th, featuring exciting activities !!

Our Sea Scout unit was thrilled to visit! We loved seeing different elements brought to life among the stalls. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet fellow Scouts from across Hong Kong, share experiences, and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

🌟 What a fantastic scout meeting! 🌟

Our scouts took on the egg-citing challenge of creating an egg parachute with just a rubbish bag and strings! 🪂 The mission? Protect the eggs and cook them if they survived the drop!

While some eggs met their fate before reaching the club, others successfully completed their journey! 😂🥚 Big congratulations to those who saved their eggs for a delicious meal! 🍳

Yesterday's scout meeting at Victoria Park and RHKYC was a fantastic blend of adventure and skill-building!

Despite the hot weather, our passion soared even higher as we tackled orienteering challenges.

Our kite activity was a true test of our skills—though it wasn't easy, we persevered and learned a lot in the process.

It’s inspiring to see everyone’s enthusiasm and teamwork. Let’s carry this spirit of learning and collaboration into our future activities. Great job, everyone!

*Visit to Adventure Ship 乘風航*

Thanks to the support of the 3rd Hong Kong Sea Scout Troop, we had an incredible learning experience on the Adventure Ship on 12 Aug, which is specially designed for educational and recreational activities. After boarding, as a start, everyone needed to pull the heavy ropes to hoist the sails, like in a game of tug-of-war!! Essential survival skills for the open sea - knowledge that every sea scout should possess - were also given by the Instructors during the voyage.

The highlight of the day, of course, was the "big jump" from the 6m high ship deck into the deliciously cool ocean. This was absolutely a real challenge for the Sea Scouts to demonstrate their bravery and courage in the scouting spirit. In addition, we also asked the scouts to walk out from the boat on a narrow plank at deck level, where they could only maintain their balance by holding onto connected arms from the fellow sailors on the boat.

During their 7-hours sea journey, they encountered different stages of emotion: from fear, tears, joy and laughter. They all appeared content and satisfied, with signs of self-confidence on their faces as disembarked from the ship. Such a memorable training has deepened our connection to the sea as well as our friendship among the scouts.

* Life Raft Drill*

We had another joint meeting with the 3rd Hong Kong Sea Scout Troop before end of the summer holiday. We featured a life raft drill at the Hong Kong Sea School on 21 August.

The giant self-inflatable raft which can seat eight passengers was activated by tossing the heavy, tightly packed raft into the air with a yank of a chord. With a whoosh, it explosively unfolded! The raft carries food provisions, water, medical supplies, flares, paddles, a flashlight, and a handbook explaining emergency procedures and survival skill at sea.

All scouts skillfully helped each other to climb into the life raft and everyone was successfully “saved”. While we hope never to be in a rescue raft, this knowledge is essential for our Sea Scouts.

Our visit to the Shandong Aircraft Carrier on 5 July was truly unforgettable! As China’s first domestically-built aircraft carrier, its colossal size and advanced design left us in awe. Scouts were thrilled to tour the vessel, including the impressive flight deck with its ski-jump ramp, the hangar bay housing and J-15 fighter jets, and the control tower, showcasing cutting-edge technology.

This experience not only highlighted China’s engineering achievements and maritime ambitions but also deepened our appreciation for naval development history and modern defense capabilities.

We are excited about being on such a massive vessel, marveling at its capacity to launch planes. Being the Sea Scouts, we felt a great connection to the navy environment and look forward to having more opportunities of getting on different kinds of marine boats.
