China's crackdown on the underground church movement continues with the recent arrest of nine Christians while hundreds of armed police and special forces surrounded another church, causing members to flee.

Numerous reports detail that prominent leaders of the Early Rain Covenant Church in Sichuan province were arrested on Tuesday. The church's leader, Li Yingqiang, was among the nine individuals taken into custody. His home and the church's office were also raided during a coordinated sweep.

According to information released by China Aid, a persecution watchdog group, several church elders, preachers, deacons, and their family members were taken away. They have since been unreachable.

18 Zion Church pastors was arrested in China. Communist China keeps violating basic human rights and freedom of religions. This is now an ongoing crackdown on Christianity by China.

Eighteen Christian leaders—including Zion Church’s senior pastor—were detained in China amid a growing crackdown on unregistered house churches. Human rights groups say the arrests are part of an ongoing campaign to punish open worship. This comes as dozens of churches report forced closures and more believers go missing.

China has formally arrested 18 leaders of Beijing’s Zion Church, including Pastor Jin “Ezra” Mingri, on charges critics say are politically motivated. They face up to three years in prison.

In response, 500+ Christian leaders from 45 countries signed a global prayer petition calling for their release and urging China to respect religious freedom. The U.S. Senate also passed a bipartisan resolution condemning the detentions.

Zion’s interim pastor says Jin is doing well in prison, quoting his message: “Don’t worry about me… I’m comforted to suffer for the gospel.”

Despite pressure, Zion Church continues worship via Zoom and small home gatherings, and new believers are joining. Leaders say persecution is strengthening global solidarity and may ultimately advance the gospel.
