Much of Asia do not have time to wait for the tepid response to climate change seen at COP28 to speed up. The region urgently needs more action and financing to help brace itself and undertake adaptation measures against the onslaught of climate crisis, and to support its transition from fossil fuels. Action, urgent action, is very much needed.

Critics say the deal is still severely lacking when it comes to addressing the climate concerns of developing nations.

COP28 ended last week but can we call it a successful one? Fossil fuels were finally accepted as a major cause of climate change and included in the text, which is a historic achievement! But will we see concrete actions by governments now? The pledging of US$700m to a "Loss and Damage Fund" was also historic but is it adequate and can it be deployed fast enough? What actions should we take now before the next COP, and will it be sufficient?

The latest round of UN climate talks (COP28) yielded the first international agreement to transition away from fossil fuels. But it wasn't all good news: action on adaptation and climate finance were lacking.

Hong Kong's pivotal role as China's offshore capital hub for green finance deserves increased attention and recognition.

UN Coordinator Siddharth Chatterjee urges China's swift action on green finance, highlighting Hong Kong's role. Financial Secretary Paul Chan stresses Asia's $66 trillion green investment needs over 30 years. Leveraging market resources is pivotal for sustainable growth, presenting both a challenge and opportunity for the financial sector.

The world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases must accelerate environmentally friendly projects if it is to transition to a low carbon economy, and this provides an opportunity for Hong Kong, says UN resident coordinator in China.

Hong Kong's Northern Metropolis need to balance conservation and development, and nature-based solutions could be a path to a "win-win" solution. Local NBS initiatives, from oyster reef restoration to reforestation proposals, showcase innovative steps to allowing dual development of Northern Metropolis and Hong Kong's story of a more sustainable, high-quality city.

Incorporating nature-based solutions can help resolve the tensions between conserving Hong Kong’s environment and promoting development. Otherwise, the city risks falling behind its peers, missing out on high-quality development and being left out of national and global initiatives.

In the latet warning from scientists, 20 of the 35 planetary vital signs they use to track the climate crisis are at record extremes, including greenhouse gas emissions, global temperature, sea level rise, as well as human and livestock population numbers.
